10/19/20

Theresa Swedzinski Ireland, Minnesota West Community and Technical College K-12 Collaboration Coordinator will be presenting at the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) Virtual Accreditation Institute on Thursday, November 5 at 2 p.m.

Irelands presentation is titled, Virtual Privilege Walk: An Intentional Mile in Our Own Shoes. The presentation will focus on understanding privilege. The presentation is intended for Secondary (counselors, teachers, administrators), Postsecondary (program managers, faculty, academic and administrative leadership), Policymakers, Students/Parents.

The Session Summary outline is as follows: We often hear "walk a mile in someone else's shoes," but to understand privilege and the intricate ways it presents in our society, it can be just as impactful to intentionally examine each step in our own shoes. This session redesigns the infamous Privilege Walk activity in an inclusive, virtual environment. Attendees will learn the purpose of the activity, and then complete the "walk." Attendees will be given an opportunity to reflect on their experience, and share insights with others. To continue their learning and growth, attendees will also be asked to create an action plan congruent with their level of competency with these specific topics.
