The Minnesota West Foundation received a $10,000 AT&T donation to support its student scholarship program during an event at the Merit Center in Marshall.

The $10,000 AT&T donation will expand the offering of the entry level Safety Awareness course to students ages 15-21 within southwest Minnesota who lack a high school diploma.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College will partner with the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council Youth Services, the Worthington School District, the Marshall Area Technical Education Center and Red Rock Area Learning Center to identify students as well as to deliver programming.

“We are very excited to receive this AT&T donation to provide scholarships to students who need financial assistance to continue their education,” said Michael Van Keulen, Director of the Minnesota West Foundation.

“This course will help these students achieve basic knowledge of a safe and productive workplace, as well as training on health and safety requirements.”

AT&T’s donation of $10,000 will fund scholarships for tuition, fees and supplies for 16 students. Typically, students who receive scholarships are first generation college students.

“AT&T Minnesota is committed to helping advance the education of our young people,” said Paul Weirtz, president of AT&T Minnesota. “We are proud to support Minnesota West’s scholarship program and help more students receive the education they need to be prepared for careers in the 21st Century.”

Students who complete the Safety Awareness course will earn two college credits that can be applied to the Industrial Technology diploma or to an A.A.S. degree through Minnesota West Community & Technical College.

“This is exciting news for Minnesota West students who are looking to continue their education and are in need of financial support,” said State Senator Gary Dahms. “Many of today’s students face financial obstacles to realizing their dreams of continued education. Scholarship support is so critical to helping many students attend and graduate college.”

“Higher education is vital to the continued prosperity of Minnesota and its residents,” said State Representative Chris Swedzinski. “It’s great to see leaders in business and education working together to help provide access to education through scholarships for many first generation college students.”

The Minnesota West Foundation believes in affordable and accessible educational opportunities for students. Because of this belief and commitment to education, the Foundation provides funding for scholarships and development opportunities for students attending Minnesota West Community & Technical College.

As a company, AT&T has a long-standing commitment to helping advance education through donations to local organizations and through the AT&T Aspire program.
