Lady Jay Basketball: Coaching Staff
The 2014-2015 season marks the 34th year for Mike Fury as coach of the Lady Jays. After graduating from Fulda High School, Coach Fury attended Worthington Community College and played under former athletic director, Arlo Mogck. He helped lead the Bluejays to two State Championships. During his sophomore year, he earned All-State and All-Region honors. After competing at Worthington Community College, Coach Fury transferred to and graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul. While at Hamline, he was co-captain and MVP. Before coaching at Worthington Community College, he coached at Atwater, Worthington, and Brewster High Schools.
At Minnesota West, Coach Fury has compiled a record of 448 wins and 353 losses. Included in those wins are nine division championships, sixteen state tournament appearances, four state consolation championships, five third place State finishes, one second place finish and two State Championships in 1984 and 1992. The 1984 team finished 3rd in Region 13, and the 1992 team finished 2nd. Fury was named Minnesota College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1997 and was named MCAC Southern Division Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013.
Former Worthington High School and Worthington Community College Lady Jay star, Rosalie (Moz) Hayenga, begins her 11th season as the Lady Jays' assistant coach. Under the direction of Coach Fury, she helped lead the Lady Jays to the 1992 State Championship, and is the all-time assist player, and is the 3rd all-time leading scorer in Lady Jay basketball history. In addition to earning All-State and All-Region honors, she was named the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) National Player of the Year in 1992. She completed her collegiate playing career at Moorhead State University.
Coach Hayenga previously served as an Assistant Basketball Coach and Women’s Softball Coach and instructor in the Sport & Recreation Management Program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She also was an assistant basketball coach at Moorhead State University. In addition to being the assistant Lady Jays basketball coach, Coach Hayenga also serves as Women's Athletic Director and instructor at Minnesota West.
