12/19/2016
The Minnesota State Board of Trustees will honor a faculty member with the Award for Excellence in Teaching. This honor acknowledges and rewards exceptional individual professional accomplishment and encourages ongoing excellence in teaching.
Minnesota West Community & Technical College has recently undergone an extensive process (using input from faculty and students from each campus) to identify candidates to serve as the Minnesota West nominee for the Award for Excellence in Teaching. Minnesota State Universities Guarantee Admission and Credit Transfer
11/17/16
Minnesota West Community & Technical College is one of 26 colleges within Minnesota State where students are able to complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and earn an A.A. degree and be eligible for guaranteed admission and full credit transfer to any of the seven universities within Minnesota State.
“Minnesota State provides an extraordinary education that is the most affordable and accessible option in the state,” said Virginia Arthur, president of Metropolitan State University. “With this guarantee, students can take full advantage of the significant cost savings our colleges and universities offer, graduate with significantly less debt than their peers, and emerge with the skills and knowledge needed to be prepared for the jobs of the future, provide for their families and contribute to their community and to the state’s economy.”
This guarantee saves students money because they can take advantage of the lower tuition rates at Minnesota State colleges for their freshman and sophomore years, then transfer to a Minnesota State university to complete their bachelor’s degree. Tuition and fees at a Minnesota State college are significantly lower – between one-half and one-tenth the cost -- of other higher education options within the state.
“This guarantee is something that only Minnesota State can offer,” said Anne Blackhurst, president of Minnesota State University Moorhead. “In addition to our overall quality and affordability, it sets our state colleges and universities apart from other higher education options in Minnesota – both public and private. Only we can make this guarantee because we are a collaborative system focused on serving the needs of students and the state of Minnesota.”
While students who complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree from any of the 26 Minnesota State community colleges are guaranteed admission and full credit transfer to any of the seven Minnesota State universities, this collaboration does not guarantee admittance to specific majors. Academic requirements for major degree programs at state universities vary. For this reason, students considering credit transfer should discuss their academic goals with an advisor at the state university they wish to attend.

Military Friendly School 2017
11/10/16
Minnesota West Community & Technical College has been designated a 2017 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university, or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.
Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation. Ratings methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.
According to Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer at Victory Media, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”For more information about Minnesota West Community & Technical College commitment to attracting and supporting military students, visit www.mnwest.edu or contact Minnesota West Certifying Officer, Barb Staples at barb.staples@mnwest.edu or 507-372-3470.

For the past two years, we have shown two of the three part series of Coming Back with Wes Moore called, “Coming Back” and “Fitting In.” This third and final video is called “Moving Forward.”
This is another glimpse into the lives of the Veterans we have met in the other two videos. It also shows that a Veteran’s service may not be done once they come home. In order to move forward and on with their lives, they must find a new purpose. The Veterans, in these videos, find their purpose in serving others.

On Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2016, Minnesota West will be broadcasting the third and final episode of Coming Home with Wes Moore “Moving Forward” at 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Commons on the Worthington Campus.
The YouTube video will be available so faculty and staff can watch it at his/her convenience and it can also be shown on campus. The link is https://youtu.be/VeItRe5viOA

A Tale of Two Bluejays: Friendship and Football
10/15/16
Fifth Grade. That is when Austin Pulse and Andrew Sorensen met for the first time and became friends not too far away, in Brandon, South Dakota. Fast forward a few years to today. Andrew and Austin, still friends and now roommates, both freshman at Minnesota West, both Law Enforcement majors and once again teammates - Bluejays this time.
Photo: Austin Pulse is pictured on the left and Andrew Sorensen is on the right.
Austin Pulse has been aware of Minnesota West for quite a while, both of his parents attended Minnesota West and were student athletes. Austin's father Scott Pulse wrestled under Bluejay Football head coach, Jeff Linder, and was also a graduate of the Minnesota West Law Enforcement program. His Mother, Karli Oye, played volleyball and softball as a Lady Jay. Austin said, “They both encouraged me to look into Minnesota West. So I did and I ended up loving it.” He decided to apply to the Law Enforcement program as his Father and many other family members have worked in law enforcement which has inspired Austin to make the same choice. Austin is an offensive and defensive lineman in the Bluejay football program. His favorite part of being a Bluejay is the way the team has come together and feels like a family as well as all the new people he has met and friends made in the last few months.
Andrew Sorensen learned about Minnesota West through Austin, as well as through his own Father. He was further drawn to Minnesota West by the comprehensive Law Enforcement program. Minnesota West was a great choice for Andrew to prepare him for his future career, as well as to continue playing football. And with an added bonus of being only about 45 minutes from home. Andrew’s draw to the Law Enforcement program comes from his desire to continue to be physically active within his career, but more importantly is his desire to be involved in community and make a difference. Andrew is a middle linebacker with the Bluejays and currently leads the NJCAA in tackles. Andrew was very modest when congratulated on leading the nation in tackles. Like Austin, he enjoys being part of a family here at Minnesota West, not only as part of the Bluejay Football Program, but also within the Law Enforcement Program.
We look forward to seeing many great things from Austin and Andrew to come! We are proud of our student athletes learning with purpose at Minnesota West.

REACH Faculty Meet Area Educators
8/22/16
The REACH program is a collaborative effort between Minnesota West Community & Technical College and area high schools. This partnership offers qualified high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn college credit in their high school setting. These courses are often referred to concurrent enrollment courses.
All REACH program courses are taught by a pre-approved, credentialed high school teacher who partners with a college faculty member. Students who successfully complete a REACH program concurrent enrollment course receive high school credit and Minnesota West college credit.
Minnesota West is proud to offer the REACH Program that provides academically strong high school students the opportunity to earn college credits without leaving their high school. The REACH program is accredited through the National Association of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).
On August 18, Minnesota West, along with their partnering high school teachers, spent the day collaborating and sharing ideas, working on NACEP accreditation standards, and provided our high school partners with the opportunity to work within their college discipline and their peer instructors on the Worthington Campus.
It was a wonderful day of teamwork, building relationships, and creating cohesiveness between everyone. We look forward to further developing our partnerships with the area schools and strengthening educational services not only this year, but in the years to come!

Fiene to Receive ACCT Award
Minnesota West mathematics instructor, Shannon Fiene, has been selected to receive the 2016 ACCT Central Region Faculty Award. The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. The ACCT recognizes exemplary members in each if it’s five regions in the categories of Trustee Leadership, Equity, Chief Executive Officer, Faculty Member, and Professional Board Staff Member.
Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, Minnesota West President, stated, “Shannon’s motto of “Tear down the wall” communicates a deep understanding and sincere appreciation for the complexities of being a true teacher. Shannon has answered a call to a vocation of service. She strives to awaken curiosity and to advantage the abilities of those seeking; and she pursues personal growth through reflection and culling that which inhibits her own understanding.”
As the 2016 ACCT Central Region Faculty Award recipient, Fiene will be recognized at the 2016 ACCT Annual Leadership Congress in New Orleans in October, along with the recipients from other regions and categories.

In Memory: Nursing Program Gift
6/16/16
Lori Beck, Minnesota West 1990 Nursing graduate, class president, and honors graduate, believed in compassionate care, in giving back, and in helping others.
Which is exactly what her husband, Brian, is doing in her memory. Lori recently passed away after a battle with cancer; and as Lori wished, he made a special stop at Minnesota West.
Lori loved her experience at Minnesota West. She also knew the struggles of being a nursing student and how the little things helped.
Lori had over 120 pieces of nursing attire, numerous shoes, sphygmomanometers, and stethoscopes that she wanted donated to the Minnesota West Nursing program to help students as they start their careers.
Lori had most recently been in nursing in White Bear Lake. She is remembered for her passion in nursing and care for her patients.
Students that have a need or want for the articles will have the opportunity to donate to a fund for a nursing scholarship in Lori’s memory.

Awarded $5.5 Million Xcel Energy Grant
6/8/16
The Minnesota Energy Center, a collaboration of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities campuses, was awarded a $5.5 million grant from the Xcel Energy Renewable Development Fund. The grant will fund leading edge research that will ensure the growth, development, and delivery of renewable electric energy technologies throughout Minnesota.
“For renewable electric energy to continue its impressive growth in Minnesota, our state needs a talented workforce that is proficient with innovative technologies,” said Steven Rosenstone, chancellor of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. “The projects funded by this grant will provide opportunities for our students to conduct state-of-the-art research that will deliver economic benefits for Xcel Energy customers and create a better environment for all Minnesotans.”
One of eight Centers of Excellence, the Minnesota Energy Center was established by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities in 2012 to develop partnerships with business and industry that ensure alignment with the current and future workforce needs of the state’s energy industries.
“Investing in innovative technology that leads to future wind, solar and other renewable energy projects benefits our customers and builds a better Minnesota,” said Chris Clark, president of Xcel Energy Minnesota. “Xcel Energy’s Renewable Development Fund creates jobs, improves the environment, and increases renewable energy use in Minnesota.”
Minnesota West Community and Technical College and St. Cloud Technical and Community College are the co-campus leads in the Energy Center. Minnesota West Community and Technical College will serve as the fiscal agent for the grant. University faculty from St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato will serve as principal investigators in the program.
“The opportunity to expand research projects at our colleges and universities to explore and develop renewable electric energy products and increase generation capacity in our state is incredible,” stated Bruce Peterson, director of the Minnesota Energy Center. “The conversations we are engaging in to prepare for this opportunity are rich as we explore how we can expand our educational opportunities for current and future students across the state of Minnesota.”
The Center will select and oversee up to 14 quality research and development projects at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities related to renewable electrical energy technology. Projects will be chosen based on their ability to improve and stimulate the use of renewable electric energy technologies throughout Minnesota.
Rosenstone said, “The projects enabled by this grant will demonstrate the applied research strength of our state colleges and universities in ways that affect all regions of the state and leverage pathways that bring technology to industry for the benefit all Minnesotans. They will exemplify how collaboration among our colleges and universities delivers outstanding results that would otherwise be impossible.”

Manufacturing & Trades - Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (MNAMP)
Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (MNAMP) was created to help close the "skills gap" in Minnesota by implementing a structure for advanced manufacturing education that emphasizes a standardized core curriculum, along with employer-driven apprenticeships and cooperative education opportunities.
MNAMP is a Minnesota State colleges and universities consortium of 12 colleges and two Centers of Excellence, which include South Central College (lead institution), Century College, Dakota County Technical Colleg, Lake Superior College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Normandale Community College, Northland Community & Technical College, Ridgewater College, Riverland Community College, Saint Paul College, 360° Manufacturing and Applied Engineering ATE Regional Center of Excellence (led by Bemidji State University), and Minnesota Center for Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence (led by Minnesota State University, Mankato).
To align training and fill jobs across the state, MNAMP established the Learn, Work, Earn program, which targets TAA-eligible workers, veterans and other adult learners seeking training to secure and/or maintain employment. In September the U.S. Department of Labor announced that South Central College would receive a $15 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant to fund Learn, Work, Earn. The project focuses on providing career pathways in advanced manufacturing in the fields of mechatronics, machining and welding. Participants will be able to earn stackable, portable industry-recognized credentials while simultaneously working in the industry. Participants will be able to enter academic programs at multiple points based on assessment results that match individual skills.
Key components of system change will include:
-
Incorporating a Core Curriculum in all three programs which aligns with the Certified Production Technician (CPT) through MSSC.
-
Providing Employer-driven apprenticeships and cooperative education opportunities
-
Establishing an assessment system to award credit for prior learning which aligns with national industry standards and credentials.
-
Enhancing the image of manufacturing and raise awareness of available high wage jobs.

Precision Machining and Mechatronics to be Offered in Fall
5/26/16
Minnesota West will now offer Precision Machining and Mechatronics beginning fall semester 2016.
Precision Machining is a 35-credit, one-year diploma program, which will train students and provide them with the skill set they need to confidently pursue a career as a machinist in the manufacturing field. Machinists are skilled craftspeople who use blueprints, precision measuring instruments and gauges, hand tools, and a variety of manual and CNC (computer numerical control) machines. They create precision and intricate parts for medical, computer, aerospace, automotive, shipping/transportation, petroleum and recreational industries.
The Mechatronics program will have two pathways for students: a 63-credit diploma program or a 72-credit Associate of Applied Science degree. Mechatronics integrates mechanical, electronics, fluid power, and computer control systems to create automated manufacturing production systems. This program prepares students to technical positions in the areas of robotics, industrial manufacturing and maintenance, fluid power, instrumentation, electronics and process control automation.
These programs and their learning outcomes have been developed in partnership with leading area employers and industries, along with support and funding from the Learn Work Earn project established by the Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (MnAMP.)
Rebecca Weber, Canby and Granite Falls Campus Dean stated, “Both the Mechatronics and Precision Machining programs bring forward the input and expertise of the industry to the classroom and labs. Industry collaboration has been key in retooling the curriculum to better prepare students for the workforce.”

Fluid Power Grad Returns with Daughter
5/19/16
Michael Pate, a 1997 Minnesota West Fluid Power graduate, comes back to tour the Granite Falls campus with his daughter. Rachel Pate wants to follow in her Dad’s footsteps. She is a high school junior making plans for after graduation. Michael, a native of Texas, was attracted to the Fluid Power program on the Granite Falls campus as a high school student. He worked in a hydraulics shop and enjoyed it. His Dad started looking around for schooling and found out there was a good school in Minnesota - Minnesota West Community & Technical College.
Michael is now the president, owner, and founder of DNP Americas in Alvin, Texas. The company is a manufacturer of hydraulic quick couplings and hydraulic valves. “A lot of the components that go into the systems that we learned about in this school,” notes Michael.
When asked how Minnesota West prepared him for what he is doing today, the immediate response from Michael was, “Priceless. When I came here, I didn't know what a cylinder was. I didn't know what a pump was. All I knew was a little bit about hydraulic hose and fittings. The things that they taught me here, every year, it's something new. I still use my training for what I did last week and what I did the first week out of school. I went straight to Nigeria, Africa after graduating and got a lot of experience. I was a little scared but the education kicked in. If it weren't for it, I wouldn't be where I am today.”
“My wife and I talk about this all the time. My father and I talk about this all the time. This program, in two years, will give you the necessary tools to work in the field and make the money that you need. You can pretty much work anywhere in the United States that you choose. It's one thing that you do not have to go to any place that you don't want to be at. You will find work as a hydraulic technician, a hydraulic salesman, a hydraulic manufacturer, “ comments Michael.
“My child, Rachel, is obviously a girl; and we were a little bit hesitant because this is dominated by ninety eight percent men, but I take disadvantages and turn them into advantages. I think a female on the sales force, if she knows just as much as a male, could be more deadlier in sales than a man can be. I highly recommend females coming out to fluid power school and getting the training and the knowledge.”
The Minnesota West Fluid Power program most recently has combined with Industrial Technology, meeting industry demand and changes. The program is now offered as Mechatronics.

College Awarded NACEP Accreditation
5/2/16
The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) granted national accreditation to concurrent enrollment programs offered by 15 colleges and universities, including Minnesota West Community & Technical College to be accredited by NACEP. Accreditation is awarded to concurrent enrollment programs that provide college credit-bearing courses to high school students taught by college-approved high school teachers. As the only national set of quality standards applicable to concurrent enrollment partnerships, NACEP’s standards serve as the model criteria for ensuring that the course content and expectations for student work in concurrent enrollment match those on the campus of the sponsoring college or university.
Concurrent enrollment programs at the following MnSCU colleges earned initial accreditation: Minnesota West Community & Technical College and Minnesota State Community & Technical College.
“By taking advantage of opportunities such as concurrent enrollment, Minnesota students are accessing college earlier, and families are saving thousands of dollars,” said Steven Rosenstone, chancellor of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. “Accreditation by NACEP further demonstrates that the programs offered by our colleges and universities adhere to the highest standards and provide a seamless transition to college.”
Minnesota West Community & Technical College President, Dr. Terry Gaalswyk notes, “NACEP accreditation demonstrates Minnesota West’s concurrent enrollment and PSEO programs adhere to the highest academic standards. The college’s commitment to provide the highest quality, most accessible, affordable options for post-secondary education assures students of Southwestern Minnesota are advantaged when matriculating from high school to college. We are pleased to share this news and look forward to expanding our high school partnerships in support of our talented high school students.”
Dr. Kayla Westra, Dean of Distance Learning & Technology at Minnesota West, comments, “NACEP provides us with a strong, evidence-based set of standards to ensure that our concurrent enrollment program with high schools is offering quality education to students in our area high schools. We appreciated NACEP’s review of our policies, practices, and guidelines, as we have continued to evolve our REACH program since its inception in 1989. Our concurrent enrollment program, REACH, aligns with Minnesota West’s mission of access to quality education, and we are proud to have earned this accreditation and look forward to serving our region’s students in the years ahead.”
To earn accreditation from NACEP, concurrent enrollment programs conduct a self-study, document how their programs adhere to NACEP’s seventeen standards, and undergo a rigorous peer-review process conducted by a team of representatives from NACEP‐accredited programs as well as the NACEP Accreditation Commission. The Commission's commitment to public disclosure includes a complete Record of Decisions reached at its spring meeting that ended April 13.
“Policymakers are increasingly looking towards dual and concurrent enrollment as a fundamental way to improve a student’s chance for college success while reducing the cost of college to families,” noted NACEP Executive Director Adam Lowe. “If students are to fully realize the benefits of concurrent enrollment, institutions must devote adequate resources and develop effective systems to oversee the academic quality of these courses - which these fifteen programs have demonstrated by implementing our national standards of program excellence.”
NACEP’s standards were developed and refined over many years, serve as a model for quality standards in seventeen states and three disciplinary professional organizations, and are implemented by a wide range of higher education institutions.
NACEP-accredited programs recently elected Bretton DeLaria of St. Louis University to join the NACEP Accreditation Commission as a Four-year Postsecondary Institutional Representative and Katie Bucci of Broom Community College (NY) as a Two-Year Postsecondary Institutional Representative. NACEP also announces the appointment of Victoria Zeppelin of Tompkins Cortland Community College (NY) as the Chair of the Commission, a role held since the Commission's establishment in 2013 by Jaclyn Dumond of University of Southern Indiana. Deanna Jessup of Indiana University fills the new Vice Chair of the Commission, the position previously held by Ms. Zeppelin.
The full listing of 98 programs nationwide currently accredited by NACEP can be found at: http://nacep.org/docs/accreditation/NACEPAccreditedPrograms.pdf.
About the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (www.nacep.org):
NACEP works to ensure that college courses offered in high schools are as rigorous as courses offered on the sponsoring college campus. As the sole national accrediting body for concurrent enrollment partnerships, NACEP helps these programs adhere to the highest standards so students experience a seamless transition to college and teachers benefit from meaningful, ongoing professional development. To advance the field and support our national network of 375 colleges and universities, 45 high schools and school districts, and 23 state agency and system office partners, we actively share the latest knowledge about best practices, research, and advocacy. Our annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky on October 16-18, 2016, will once again be the premier destination for college officials, high school leaders, policymakers, and researchers interested in creating an effective academic bridge between high school and college.

Culture Corner Presents Where is Home?
4/29/16
Worthington Campus
The Culture Corner which is a partnership with Minnesota West and the Nobles County Integration Collaborative will present Where is Home? on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Culture Corner Room 501 on the Worthington Campus.
“Where is Home? is a dramatic presentation of excerpts from letters written by a German immigrant to America in the late 1800s telling his story of struggles and successes. His experience has similarities and contrast to immigrant experiences today. Discussing the parallels can yield greater understanding. Jim Krapf portrays the character of JurnJakob Swehn with the assistance two other actors taking several roles. The nine episodes in the 30 minute presentation reveal the “mensch” (the internal character) of Jurnjakob in relationship with the old country, his family, work, failures and achievements, people in need, and his sense of home.”
A certificate of attendance will be provided for two clock hours. This event is open to the public. For more information contact Le Lucht at 507-372-3426 or Jaidy Kolander at 507-376-3300.

Medical Coding Program Earned Approval
4/28/16
Minnesota West's Medical Coding program is approved by the AHIMA Foundation’s Professional Certificate Approval Program. This designation acknowledges the coding program as having been evaluated by a peer review process against a national minimum set of standards for entry-level coding professionals. This process allows academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and private companies to be acknowledged as offering an approved coding certificate program.
Genevieve Velde, Minnesota West Medical Occupations instructor and advisor, comments, “I am proud to have been a part of the team that worked towards bringing the Medical Coding Specialist program to the national standards set by AHIMA. This process has solidified the high program standards that we have followed throughout each course.”
Terri Petersen, Minnesota West Medical Coding instructor comments, "I am excited that Minnesota West Community and Technical College has an accredited medical coding program to offer current and future students. It is a sign that Minnesota West ascribes to, believes in-and has met-an external set of basic criteria for its medical coding program. It indicates that threshold standards are adhered to in a way that provides a base of academic strength, operational integrity and quality education in medical coding. It will open doors for our students to become certified coders and have more opportunities for employment and for furthering their education."
Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, Minnesota West Community & Technical College President, also notes, “Approval of a Program is a hallmark of quality, our faculty’s dedication in assuring our Medical Coding Program meets these standards is evidence of our continue commitment to providing the highest quality, most affordable educational pathways for our students and industry partners”
Medical Coding Specialists work closely with other health care professionals in coding diagnosis and procedures on patient medical records, analyzing medical records for completeness of documentation, working with insurance companies, and reimbursement procedures.
For more information visit the Medical Coding program or 800-658-2330.
The AHIMA Foundation’s Professional Certification Approval Program designation:
- Identifies specialized programs that meet established coding educational standards.
- Stimulates improvement of educational standards through faculty development opportunities, and by involving faculty and staff in program evaluation and planning.
- Promotes a better understanding of the goals of professional coding education.
- Provides reasonable assurance that practitioners possess the necessary job skills upon entry into the profession.

MLT Earns Re-Accreditation
4/22/16
Luverne Center
Minnesota West's Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program has earned the full 10-years re-accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). NAACLS is committed to being the premier international agency for accreditation and approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and related health professions through the involvement of expert volunteers and its dedication to public service.
Dr. Rita Miller, MLT Program Director/Instructor, was elated to receive the news. Miller states “The MLT Program could not be possible without the dedication of laboratory professionals in the hospitals and clinics who mentor the students during their 40 hour/week, 6 months externship. Additionally, my appreciation goes to the members of the MLT Advisory Board who are instrumental in making decisions for the betterment of the program.”
Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, Minnesota West President notes, “Accreditation demonstrates through an independent, peer review that our MLT program meets and exceeds the national standards set forth; achieving such demonstrates the commitment of our faculty in assuring that the highest caliber academic opportunities are available through Minnesota West.”
Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) play a key role in assisting medical professionals, working behind the scenes to perform tests to search for basic clues to the absence, presence, extent, and causes of diseases. This skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately for high-quality patient care. Most people do not know what happens to their specimens (blood, sputum, urine, etc.) once they arrive in the laboratory. They don’t know that medical laboratory professionals will conduct some of the most complex and important work on those specimens, and that knowing the results of that work may very well save your life. Medical laboratory professionals provide up to 70 percent of the medical laboratory results/data for physicians and others to make informed decisions about one’s diagnosis and treatment plan.
MLT is one of the fastest-growing careers in the medical field. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 7,700 new MLS and MLT professionals will be needed each year between 2012 and 2022. MLT Employment will have a 30% growth by 2022. In 2013 NAACLS summarized that the number of laboratory graduates needed/year will be 14,000 however the number graduating each year is 6,322 so short fall of 7,678. In Minnesota, the estimated employment in 2012 was 3,140 and the projected employment in 2022 is 4,082. This is a 30% change. Dr. Miller states that “job placement is 100%. Many students are hired before they finish their externship.”
National Medical Laboratory Professional Week is celebrated April 24-30, 2016 to increase public understanding and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel.

Fiene Awarded Excellence in Teaching
4/20/16
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today presented the Awards for Excellence, honors conferred to recognize professional achievement and excellence. Dr. Shannon Fiene, Minnesota West Community & Technical College Mathematics instructor is the recipient of the 2016 Board of Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
View MnSCU's video of Shannon Fiene.
At an event held to present the awards, Steven Rosenstone, MnSCU chancellor said, “There’s a very good reason we’re here celebrating you today. It is you, our faculty, who make our colleges and universities great. When we talk about ensuring access to an extraordinary education for all Minnesotans, we’re really talking about access to you. When we talk about our quality academic programs, we’re really talking about the work you do, both inside and outside of the classroom. When we talk about preparing students for life and careers, we’re really talking about the education you provide. And when we talk about changing lives, you are the women and men who help our students create a better future for themselves, for their families, and for their communities.”
The Board of Trustees presented the Awards for Excellence in Teaching, which acknowledge and reward exceptional professional accomplishment in teaching. Evaluation criteria include teaching strategies and materials; content expertise and professional growth; assessment of student learning and performance; and service to students, the profession, the institution, and the system. This is the tenth year of the awards. The awards were presented to Dr. Justin Berry, Instructor in the Physical Therapy Assistant program at Northland Community and Technical College, William Breen, instructor of English at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Adam Marcotte, instructor of English at Central Lakes College, and Dr. Shannon Peak Fiene, instructor of Mathematics at Minnesota West Community and Technical College.
“Outstanding faculty at all our colleges and universities make it possible for us to provide an extraordinary education for all Minnesotans,” said Mike Vekich, chair of the Board of Trustees. “The programs our faculty deliver – academic programs, advising, financial aid, registration, residential life, and student affairs, just to name a few – are vital to our ability to serve students and communities in every corner of the state.”
Dr. Shannon Peak Fiene, instructor of Mathematics at Minnesota West Community and Technical College.
Caring and approachable, noted as a “remarkable teacher,” Dr. Shannon Peak Fiene’s motto, “tear down the walls,” speaks to her commitment to lowering the barriers that block learning for students, many of whom come to her classes very nervous about math. While keeping expectations high, Fiene lowers those barriers in part by making learning fun: using audio, video, active learning, and humor to reach even the most math-anxious students. One way she does this is through a word cloud activity at the start of a developmental math class: students are asked to submit two or three words that come to mind when they think about math. Fiene then generates a word cloud that she shares with students; the visual provides reassurance to students that they are not alone in their worries. The students do the activity again at the end of the course, and Fiene notes the growth as student reactions “transform from those of emotions and expressions of hesitation to ideas related to key mathematical concepts.”
Minnesota West Community & Technical College President, Dr. Terry Gaalswyk notes, “Dr. Fiene makes complex, theoretical applications simple not through simplicity but by creating connections – a true master of the art.”
Minnesota West Provost Dr. Jeff Williamson comments, “Dr. Shannon Fiene is an exceptional teacher, an exceptional community member, and an exceptional leader. She is a leader in innovative classroom delivery and at the forefront of technology to develop learning modes. “
“Dr. Shannon Fiene is deserving of this honor not only due to her content expertise, but because of her ability to convey that wisdom to our students. Dr. Fiene's talents and services to the College and system are multifaceted. Her gift provides a learning environment both challenging and enjoyable,” comments, Rebecca Weber, Dean of Canby and Granite Falls campuses.

Digital Survey 2016
4/11/16
The Center for Digital Education (CDE) announced the winners of its 2015-16 Digital Community Colleges Survey. Now in its eleventh year, the Digital Community Colleges Survey analyzes how community colleges use a range of technologies to improve services to students, faculty, staff and the community at large.
“This year’s survey indicates community colleges are making great strides in using data to improve decisions, providing professional development to assist faculty in the use of technology, and creating robust online and mobile environments for their students,” said Dr. Kecia Ray, executive director for the Center for Digital Education. “Congratulations to this year’s survey winners.”
Award winners demonstrated innovative uses of technology, including online courses and mobile environments, mobile apps, secure platforms and wireless networks. Minnesota West Community & Technical College was ranked 6th in the Mid-Sized Colleges Category. This category consisted of colleges that had between 5,000 and 10,000 students.
This year’s Digital Community Colleges Survey also revealed insights about community colleges’ technology priorities. Colleges surveyed indicated that mobility devices/app support and website redesign are their top priorities in the coming year, followed by cybersecurity tools and testing, network infrastructure modernization, server consolidation and virtualization, and disaster recovery/business continuity. The survey also revealed that, 59% of colleges now offer professional development courses on how to use mobile apps for instruction; while 93% offer professional development courses on how to integrate technology into curriculum and instructional practices.
All accredited U.S. community colleges are eligible to participate in the Digital Community Colleges Survey within three classifications based on enrollment size. CDE thanks last year’s first-place winners who abstained from participation to contribute as members of the development panel for this year’s survey: Northern Virginia Community College, Va.; Lord Fairfax Community College, Va.; and Carl Sandburg College, Ill.

Best Online Colleges in Minnesota
2/13/16
Accredited Schools Online, a leading resource for online learning and college affordability information, has released its ranking for the 2015-2016 Best Online Colleges for Minnesota.
Minnesota West Community & Technical College was ranked second among two-year colleges in the state of Minnesota for 2015-2016.
According to a recent study by the Babson Survey Research Group, 26 percent of students in Minnesota are enrolled in at least one distance learning course.
“We wanted to recognize schools, like Minnesota West Community & Technical College, that are implementing convenient and cutting-edge technological learning opportunities to all students,” said Doug Jones, CEO and Founder of Accredited Schools Online. “These schools are not only offering exceptional programs, but they have expanded their program excellence to the much-desired online environment.”
Ranked schools meet a number of criteria and metrics, including:
- Must offer an Associate’s degree or higher.
- Must be a public or private, not-for-profit institution.
- Must offer at least one fully-online associate’s degree program.

College Receives Agricultural Grant
1/27/16
Minnesota West Community & Technical College received grant monies from the Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council (MAELC) for two $85,000 grants, totaling $170,000. These funds will allow Minnesota West to hire two additional Farm Business Management instructors, one in the Marshall/Granite Falls area and one in the Welcome, MN area.
MAELC is a 17-member legislative council dedicated to improving and restructuring Agricultural Education in Minnesota at all levels. Minnesota West Interim Dean of Management Education and Farm Business Management Instructor, Paul Lanoue, comments, “The additional grant funding will assist Farm Business Management education to be sustainable and viable. This will be an opportunity to take our Farm Business Management to the next level, to try new things and to be innovative in our delivery, demonstrate positive data, and to assist in educating underserved areas, and to continue to be an agriculture education leader in the state.”
Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, President at Minnesota West, comments, “We greatly appreciate the support from the legislature and MAELC for making these funds available. Through this support, Minnesota West is able expand our proven-programming in alignment with the realities of the ag communities we serve.”
Minnesota West's Farm Business Management program assists farm families in meeting their business and personal goals through quality farm records and business decisions. The program is taught through places of business and farms, or through confidential web based discussions, with individualization being the key. To best meet the needs of the Farm Business Management student, instructors work very closely with farm lenders, Ag Extension personnel, and other Ag professionals. Diplomas and certificates are available in areas of Farm Business Management and scholarships are available to beginning farmers.

Aspen Prize for Community Colleges
1/26/16
Highlighting the critical importance of improving student success in America’s community colleges, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program today named Minnesota West Community & Technical College as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million dollars in prize funds, as well as Siemens Technical Scholars Program student scholarships.
The Prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and access and success for minority and low-income students.
Nearly half of America’s college students attend community college, with more than seven million students – youth and adult learners – working towards certificates and degrees in these institutions across the country. “Community colleges have tremendous power to change lives, and their success will increasingly define our nation’s economic strength and the potential for social mobility in our country,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “This competition is designed to spotlight the excellent work being done in the most effective community colleges, those that best help students obtain meaningful, high-quality education and training for competitive-wage jobs after college. We hope it will raise the bar and provide a roadmap to better student outcomes for community colleges nationwide.”
A full list of the selected colleges and details on the selection process are available at www.aspenprize.org
Scholarship Opportunities
For the first time, the 150 Prize-eligible institutions are also invited to nominate exceptional students enrolled in their best middle-skill STEM programs for scholarships. Up to 50 Siemens Technical Scholars will be selected from programs that provide outstanding preparation for high-demand jobs in manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. A partnership between the Siemens Foundation and the Aspen Institute, the Siemens Technical Scholars Program intends to help our nation’s community colleges and their business partners bridge the gap between projected shortages of skilled workers and the millions of high-demand jobs in these STEM industries. Scholarship winners and the programs that deliver rigorous training enabling their success will be announced in fall 2016. For more information and to view video profiles of 2015 Siemens Technical Scholars, go to: http://as.pn/stscholars.
Minnesota West Community and 149 other community colleges announced today were selected from a national pool of over 1,000 public two-year colleges using publicly available data on student outcomes in three areas:
-
Performance (retention, graduation rates including transfers, and degrees and certificates per 100 full-time equivalent students).
-
Improvement (awarded for steady improvement in each performance metric over time).
-
Equity (evidence of strong completion outcomes for minority and low-income students).
Minnesota West Community & Technical College has been invited to submit an application to the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence containing detailed data on degree and certificate completion (including progress and transfer rates), labor market outcomes (employment and earnings), and student learning outcomes.
Ten finalists will be named in fall 2016. The Aspen Institute will then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect additional quantitative data. A distinguished Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner and a few finalists with distinction in early 2017.
The Aspen Prize is funded by the Joyce Foundation, the Siemens Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation.
The Aspen College Excellence Program aims to advance higher education practices, policies, and leadership that significantly improve student outcomes. Through the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the New College Leadership Project, and other initiatives, the College Excellence Program works to improve colleges’ understanding and capacity to teach and graduate students, especially the growing population of low-income and minority students on American campuses. The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. As president of the Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators (MAAE), Vrieze invested the organization in scholarship and teacher mentor programs as well as new positions for a professional development coordinator and executive director/lobbyist.
As president and treasurer for Minnesota Association of Career and Technical Education (MnACTE), he coalesced affiliate organizations underneath MnACTE to strengthen the association as a voice for all CTE in the state. His staunch advocacy on behalf of CTE has resulted in increasing funding for postsecondary FBM programs in Minnesota by $1 million biennially and establishing a permanent local levy authority for secondary CTE.
Beginning in the early 2000s and moving into his retirement, Vrieze continued to champion opportunities for students through his work with various scholarship and grant committees. His eight-year term as board member on the Minnesota Agriculture Education Leadership Council (MAELC) included five years as a Governor’s appointee, for which he oversaw the distribution of over $2 million in grants and scholarships to CTE programs and students.
The Awards Banquet was sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, Kuder, CareerSafe, Certiport, and Stratasys, Project Management Institute Educational Foundation and International Baccalaureate.

About the Otto Bremer Foundation
Created in 1944, the Otto Bremer Foundation, based in St. Paul, assists people in achieving full economic, civic and social participation in and for the betterment of their communities. This mission is based on the intent of founder Otto Bremer, a German immigrant and successful banker who was a dedicated community leader involved in civic, financial and corporate life. His vision and longstanding commitment to communities during and after the Great Depression are carried forward today through the Foundation’s work in the places that are homes and neighbors to Bremer Banks. The Foundation strives to help build healthy, vibrant communities—communities where basic needs are met, mutual regard is prized and opportunities for economic, civic and social participation are within everyone's reach.
The Otto Bremer Foundation owns 92 percent of Bremer Bank and receives an equivalent share of the bank profits that are paid out as dividends. This means that a large portion of bank profit is invested back in local communities through grants and program-related investments.
In 2013, the Foundation provided approximately $38 million in grants and program-related investments to more than 700 organizations in Bremer Bank communities in Minnesota, North Dakota and western Wisconsin.

Theater to Present Evita
10/31/15
The Minnesota West Community & Technical College Theater Department will present Evita on November 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and on November 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater on the Minnesota West, Worthington Campus.
The Fall Theater Production of Evita is directed by Eric E. Parrish with choreography by Sydney Place-Sallstrom. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 adults/$5 students. Minnesota West students, staff, and faculty are free with Minnesota West ID.
In Evita, Argentina's controversial First Lady is the subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven and dead at thirty-three.
Eva Peron "saint to the working class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military" was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th-century. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, Evita creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself.
Some adult situations and language.
The Minnesota West Foundation will be hosting a reception in the lobby after the opening performance on Friday, November 20. Join us for some treats with an ethnic, Argentinian flair, and meet the cast and crew of Evita!
Make plans to attend the Fall Theater Department Production of Evita.

Often these goals involve generating new profit. Good management requires a sound knowledge of economic principles because they are the framework for small business operation and organization. Good management ties all sections of the small business together. It provides a perspective, showing the relationship of all parts to one another, and to the whole small business. Management must understand various alternatives that can be used in decision making. Small business management instruction is concerned with the development of an entrepreneur's knowledge of economic principles and with the decision-making process.

Farm Business Management
The primary emphasis of Farm Business Management is to assist farm families in meeting their business and personal goals through quality farm records and sound business decisions. Farm Business Management is designed to work closely with active, functional farmers and persons interested in farming as a business.
Program Benefits:
- Taught at the student's place of business
- Confidential, web-based discussions
- Individualized instruction
- Customized to the strengths and weaknesses of each student’s business
Developing a set of sound farm records is the basis for the program. Primarily, computerized accounting is used to handle the complex records which must be kept in an efficient farm business. At the close of the calendar year, these records are summarized with the assistance of the instructor, and a computerized business analysis is prepared for each student to show how well their business did financially during the year. Each student also receives an Area Farm Business Analysis summary, allowing them to compare their information with averages of other Farm Business Management students (farmers) in their local area and Southwestern Minnesota.
To best meet the needs of the Farm Business Management student, instructors work very closely with farm lenders, Ag Extension personnel, and other Ag professionals. Instructors must be informed of current issues relating to agriculture because a decision made today on the farm may be implemented the following day and will influence the long-range future of that business.

Madolyn Jensen Learning with Purpose
10/20/15
Meet Madolyn Jensen, a first year student in the Fluid Program at Minnesota West. Madolyn grew up near Dawson, Minnesota. Other important details about Madolyn - she is an identical twin, a John Deere Scholarship recipient, loves to sing, to work with her hands, and is always looking to the next adventure to keep her busy!
One of three women currently in Minnesota West’s Fluid Power Program, Madolyn became interested in Fluid Power through her high school Agriculture program, which offered a semester class in the subject. Madolyn was also very active in her high school FFA Chapter. This involvement in FFA led her high school Agriculture instructor to recommend the John Deere Scholarship program to Madolyn.
Madolyln took her instructor’s recommendation and applied for the John Deere Scholarship. In doing so she completed one application, but as a student was grouped into scholarship categories within the John Deere Scholarship Program based on her interests. In determining recipients, the student is also evaluated on how many hours are put into extracurricular activities such as FFA and other volunteer work and groups. After applying, in the late spring, and much to her surprise, Madolyn was awarded a John Deere Scholarship for the 2015 Academic Year! Unbeknownst to her, her high school Agriculture instructor had been notified and opted to share the information with Madolyn and her peers at the High School FFA Awards Banquet last spring.
When asked how the scholarship enhances her college career, Madolyn stated it makes her want to, “Work hard and prove I am a well-deserving recipient of the scholarship.” When asked why she chose Minnesota West, Madolyn elaborated that Minnesota West is one of only four schools in Minnesota with a Fluid Power Program and she liked that it was close to home. Madolyn is able to car pool and commute to classes pretty easily as her Mom is an instructor in Computer Support Technology on the Granite Falls Campus.
Her favorite part about being a student at Minnesota West? That the, “Instructors are very personable and great to work with. They will help you anytime you need help, in person or via email."
In addition to being a student, Madolyn is also a member of Student Senate, serving as Secretary, is the Public Relations representative for the local BPA (Business Professionals of America), and takes voice lessons from Minnesota West’s Eric Parrish, a Music and Theatre instructor on the Worthington Campus.
At Minnesota West, we are proud of our students, who are demonstrating everyday what it means to Learn with Purpose!

On Monday, October 5, 2015, the first-ever Computer Support Technology Reunion was held on the Granite Falls Campus.
This reunion was open to all past graduates, instructors, and friends of the program to celebrate 20 years of technology graduates. The event began with lunch and a social hour at 11:30 a.m. and lasted into the afternoon.
The event was a great success with over 40 alumni and guests in attendance! The reunion was led by Computer Support Technician Faculty, Pam Jensen. Minnesota West Graduates in attendance introduced themselves and talked about their current positions, which range from work in fields such as health care, education, banking, construction and agriculture.
After lunch and introductions, Jensen led a discussion with alumni and other guests on what courses had benefitted them the most in their careers.
The group also discussed technology trends and developments they are seeing in the workplace and how to develop coursework to match the trends and developing technologies to better prepare current and prospective students for their career.
Guests and alumni, along with Instructor Jensen, discussed the fact that each year the need for trained computer technology staff is growing. Minnesota West is well equipped to meet the need and provide graduates to feed the workforce demand in the Computer Careers arena. Jensen noted that each year more and more industries are contacting her with paid internship opportunities for students in computer career programs. One of the many reasons Minnesota West is the right choice for students seeking a computer career!

Minnesota West Community and Technical College nursing students will train on a new mannequin starting this fall semester.
Lori Kurtz, the education specialist for Laerdal Medical, spent Wednesday with Minnesota West nursing instructors, training them on how to operate the newly acquired Laerdal SimMan Essential mannequin.
Minnesota West Director of Nursing Dawn Gordon said the college received its first training mannequin approximately 10 years ago. The school believes this type of hands-on training is exactly what the students require.
“All students need that time to practice before they head out and work with real patients,” Gordon said. “Ten years later, we have continued to evolve and have one of the strongest and largest programs in the state. Because of that, we continue to work on creative and innovative processes to train students. One of them is with simulation.”
Gordon said Minnesota West President Terry Gaalswyk is supportive of the innovativeness of the college’s nursing program and realizes there is a great need for health care professionals. Minnesota West is doing its best to produce many highly trained professionals who are ready for the workforce, she added.
“Nursing programs all over southwest Minnesota had the maximum number of students that we could handle because industry workers have asked us for more nurses,” Gordon said.
“There are retirees in our communities that are no longer in practice, and there is a need for different team models for LPNs and RNs working together,” she added. “We’re seeing an increase in need for our students coming into our programs.
“We want to have a great sense of quality of training for all of your students involved. With that came the idea to build on more simulation.”
The new SimMan mannequin is worth approximately $60,000. Gordon said it allows the instructor to control its symptoms and reactions to the care the nursing students give it.
The mannequin allows for many different types of health care training. The instructor can have the students check for pulse, bowel sounds and breathing. Students will learn to detect symptoms of strokes, pneumonia, heart attacks and other health issues depending on what symptoms the mannequin is displaying.
Gordon said the symptoms and health issues will increase in severity as the semester goes on so students can gain as much experience as possible.
“We surveyed students about how valuable they think simulation training is for their learning,” she said. “Ninety-six percent say that it is so valuable and it adds so much to their learning experience. They are feeling that they are safe practitioners when they are in the workforce.”
The mannequin was donated by Worthington Regional Health Care Foundation, Laerdal Medical and Avera Medical Group Worthington.
“If it wasn’t for the awesome health care providers here in Worthington, we wouldn’t have been able to develop our program the way we have,” Gordon said.

Meet Benjamin Yagan
Why Education is Important by Benjamin Yagen
Education means many things to people. To some it means freedom, to some a better life, to others it is a way to have a meaningful career. To Benjamin Yagan, it is all of these and more. Benjamin is a native of Kenya. He came to the United States to fulfill his, his mother's and his community’s hope for a better life. His widowed mother, a kindergarten teacher, started teaching him at a young age that an education would be the key to freedom of poverty. This freedom will not be easy nor would it be free.
Education in his home country of Kenya is not available to everyone nor is it required. Benjamin’s father died when he was 13 years-old leaving his mother, who made approximately $66 a month, to sell beans or firewood after school to keep her children in school. His mother was also able to get a loan to help pay for his education. As Benjamin got older and advanced into high school, his brother and two sisters took a break from school so that he could continue on with his classes. The high school was a boarding school therefore considerably more expensive.
In Kenya, students not only have to pay fees to attend classes, but also find their own transportation. Benjamin would run to school until his family purchased a bicycle. The one hour trip on his bicycle would take him through brush-filled roads requiring his mother to remove thorns from his feet and legs.
Once Benjamin completed high school, his dream was to come to the United States of America and attend a university. He conversed with a university in Wichita, KS and started the process of becoming an international student. Step one was to find a financial sponsor, essentially someone with a healthy bank account who would help him financially through college. He found a “friend of a friend” who said they would provide the funding him.
Step two, the most difficult, was to get the visa from the embassy. Benjamin visited the embassy four times and each time the answer was a resounding NO! In fact the last time he visited, they escorted him out and told him not to return because his financial sponsor had closed the bank account and the money was not available. This was devastating to him both emotionally and financially. His family had sold most of what they had for the $1,000 fee for each of the visa applications. They had sold two cows, a sheep and two large pieces of steel roofing. They had also asked family and friends for assistance with the money to help pay for the application fees. It was difficult for Benjamin to tell his mother about the rejection; however, she was encouraging and told him that she was praying for an answer to come to him.
Without the visa, Benjamin could not become an international student at a university in the United States. After staying in Nairobi for a month with friends, he decided to file an application in October 2009 for a U.S. green card, which put him in a lottery for the green card. His mother continued to pray, but this time for the green card. Her prayers were partially answered in May of 2010 when Benjamin got a letter indicating that he was chosen to continue the application process and needed to come to an interview at the embassy. After his last encounter at the embassy, he was hesitant to return. His mother encouraged him; however, the cost of going to Nairobi again and application fees pushed the family to sell some of their land used to grow beans and vegetables. By this time, the many family and friends that helped in the past were not were no longer able or willing to support him financially. They thought his dream of going to the United States was just that – a dream.
In September 2010, Benjamin Yagan received his acceptance for his green card. A great day for his family, but it also meant more financial struggles to provide the funding for physicals, immunizations and travel costs including airfare. He also would need a sponsor from the United States to write an affidavit of support. His sponsor was a friend associated with a church in Marshall MN.
As Ben traveled to the United States, he had a layover in Qatar. While staying the hotel with a large nice bed and a flush toilet, Benjamin wept thinking of what it took for this all to happen. In that room, Benjamin wrote down 3 promises: 1) Give back to his mother for all that she sacrificed. 2) Give back to God. 3) Give back to the community that helped him reach his dream.
Benjamin got to the United States on October 16, 2011.
Within one month, Benjamin secured a job with the Schwan Food Company in the factory. He was thrilled with his first paycheck. He sent it all to his mother except the $20 application fee to start his college career with Minnesota West Community & Technical College. Finally, he was a college student in the United States.
Benjamin started by taking the certified nursing assistant course at the courthouse in Marshall, followed by biology, anatomy and general course work leading to acceptance into the nursing program at the Minnesota West. He finally was accepted into the practical nursing program at Minnesota West – Pipestone Campus in August 2013. After successfully completing that program with honors, Benjamin continued on for a second year and once again graduated with honors with his associate Degree of Nursing (RN) in May 2015. He plans to continue on this fall working towards a Bachelor of Nursing degree, which is offered online.
While attending classes full-time, Benjamin continued to work three different jobs. The money earned has been used to make good on the promises he made in 2011. He helped his mother build a house, dig a well, and buy a car. He purchased more land for his mother, including the land they sold for his airline ticket, and secured the area with a fence. He helped his church in Kenya construct a better building and consistently sends money to support his home church. He is paying for his sister’s education as well as another student from his village.
Benjamin wants to help others who have the desire and ambition to come to the United States and receive their education. He is helping about 120 high school graduates from his village to apply for a green card and start the application process. The application process is similar to a lottery. He is hoping that 20 will be chosen for a green card. In return, he hopes these young people will come to the United States to get an education, begin their careers, and then help others out of the poverty he has experienced.
Benjamin has brought at least 5 students to Minnesota West to pursue their education dreams. When asked where he felt his educational journey would end, he showed his first sign of uncertainty. Benjamin is undecided if he should become a nurse practitioner, a nurse anesthetist, or a doctor. No matter what Benjamin Yagan decides, he will always be grateful for his mother’s dream and prayers to get him this far.
