Limited Opportunity Fall 2024

Free PSEO course through ICAN grant – Composition I

Minnesota West has been awarded a grant from Jobs For the Future (JFF), in partnership with the Greater Twin Cities United Way (GTCUW) and The Learning Accelerator (TLA) to offer online college Composition I courses (ENGL 1101) to PSEO high school students throughout Minnesota. This opportunity is funded under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Education Innovative and Research (EIR) Program.

ENGL 1101 Composition I (3 credits) – This online course fulfills Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Goal areas 1 (Communication) and 2 (Critical Thinking). This course is designed for students with the goal of pursuing a 2-year transfer degree (AA) or bachelor's degree. This course is sometimes a requirement for technical programs and will benefit all students who want to improve their writing skills.

Why take advantage of this grant opportunity?
JFF has partnered with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to conduct a research study looking at the effectiveness of online dual enrollment English courses that deliberately incorporate growth mindset learning strategies to support online learning instruction and student perseverance and completion.

Your instructors will be trained and supported to provide students with opportunities to learn, practice, and refine the following skills:
• Relationships: Build and maintain positive relationships with others, including peers, professors, and educational institutions.
• Growth Mindset & Academic Identity: Develop a self-concept that includes the belief that they can be academically successful in a collegiate setting with effort and persistence. Individuals with a growth mindset embrace challenges, persist when they encounter barriers, learn from constructive criticism, and seek inspiration in others’ success.
• Problem-Solving: Solve common challenges in a virtual collegiate setting using targeted skills and strategies.
• Self-Management: Self-regulate and self-direct their learning to meet the expectations of a collegiate course.

Am I eligible to participate?
Eligible students must be admitted to Minnesota West as PSEO students (click here for admissions process), consent to special data gathering and providing feedback on the course and experience, and have parental consent to participate.

Consent form
• English: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7221150/ICAN-Informed-Consent-English
• Karen: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7239875/ICAN-Informed-Consent-Karen

• Spanish: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7228255/ICAN-Informed-Consent-Spanish

The course IDs of the Fall 2024 sections eligible for this project are: 000647 and 000648

DATA PRIVACY: To assess and demonstrate the impact of this innovative model, JFF and AIR will collect the following data from the school district (if available):

• Gender
• Race / Ethnicity
• Eligibility for FRL (or an alternative indicator of low-income status)
• English learner status
• Individualized Education Plan (IEP) status
• Unweighted GPA from previous school year (Grade 10 or 11)
• Final grade in the college course
• End of the year unweighted GPA

All background characteristics of students and participating school districts will be removed from data submission prior to submission to JFF and AIR including student name, grade level, and school district. The remaining information will be combined with the data from all participants and shared with AIR in a manner that guarantees student and school district anonymity.

Students will be asked to share their college student email addresses for survey follow-up (to receive a $25 gift card to thank them for participating).
Students will complete two surveys where they share their opinions about the quality of the course, the instructors, and their learning.

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Admissions

Occupational Therapy is a healthcare profession that works with people of all ages, diagnoses, and living situations to help achieve increased independence in their valued occupations. We consider the tasks of daily living, such as making breakfast, taking a shower, caring for children, playing, and even sitting in school, as important occupations that help individuals succeed in life. When someone is unable to do one or several of their valued occupations, an occupational therapy assistant may have the opportunity to work with the individual on an established plan of care to achieve the goals that the individual has helped set. It is a growing, challenging, and exciting career path for anyone who enjoys using their creative skills to help individuals become, regain, or work toward independence.

An occupational therapy assistant is supervised by an occupational therapist.

Dental Assistant Expanding to Luverne Center

4/17/19

Minnesota West is expanding the Dental Assistant program to the Minnesota West Luverne Center. The Dental Assisting program is currently offered on the Canby campus and starting Fall 2019, the program will expand to the Luverne center. Classroom lecture will be delivered in web-based methods; and lab will be face-to-face at the center.

Jackie Otkin, Minnesota West Dean of Allied Health comments, “The job outlook and opportunities in rural Minnesota and southeastern South Dakota made the decision to expand the program to Luverne an easy one. The access for students for education and employment is a good fit to extend the program in Luverne. Our partnership with the city of Luverne, as well as the community, has been instrumental in the success of the center. The expansion of the program will result in a full functional dental lab for service opportunities as well.”

“I am thrilled that we will be able to increase educational opportunities by expanding our Dental Assistant Program to Luverne, Minnesota,” comments Minnesota West Dental Assistant instructor, Sara Abrahamson. “Expansion of our Dental Assistant Program to the Luverne site will increase the availability of quality dental assistants in our region,” adds Minnesota West Dental Assistant instructor Teresa Noyes.

The Dental Assistant program is designed to prepare individuals for a career in a variety of oral healthcare settings. This may be as a clinical chairside assistant to a dentist or dental hygienist or as a non-clinical practice management assistant. The program is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and upon completion the student will take national and state examinations leading to certification and licensure in dental assisting.

Nursing Program Prospers as New Year Approaches

12/19/18

The Minnesota West Nursing program is proud to announce grant funding, collaboration, renovation, and accreditation visit in 2019.

The Minnesota West Nursing program has secured $48,000 in funding through two grants set to begin in the Spring of 2019.

The Minnesota State Faculty Development diversity grant called Culturally Relevant Teaching Praxis in Nursing Education in collaboration with SMSU, and MSU Mankato’s nursing departments for $10,000 is a project in which faculty are involved in this learning, teaching, and training in the Spring of 2019.

The Foreign Born Nursing Student Success grant for $38,000 was awarded from the MN Legislature and uses the Zander curriculum to deliver nursing student success techniques to nursing students. The awarded amount will begin in Spring 2019 and continues through Spring 2020.

In addition to increased grant funding opportunities, the partnership between SMSU and Minnesota West continues to expand; this partnership has been an asset in meeting the mission of both academic settings, and the students served by these institutions.  Most recently, a collaboration including a memorandum of understanding was developed and SMSU now provides an RN to BSN Early Entry Program to nursing students served by Minnesota West.  Nursing students in the Minnesota West Professional Nursing (RN) Associate Degree Program are provided with an expanded application timeframe to the SMSU RN to BSN Program, to allow students to apply at the beginning of the Minnesota West Professional Nursing (RN) Associate Degree Program.  The strengthened partnership and RN to BSN Early Entry Program are ways that SMSU and Minnesota West strive to meet the healthcare workforce needs in our region.

While striving to meet healthcare and educational needs in the region the New Simulation Center on the Pipestone campus is slated for renovation of the nursing labs to being in Spring 2019. Along with renovations on the Pipestone Campus $10,000 in equipment has been secured for clinical experience and virtual simulations beginning Spring 2019.

The Practical Nursing Program is looking forward to hosting the MN Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) in February 2019. The Minnesota West Nursing Department strives to be a strong partner and educational leader while serving the students and filling healthcare needs in the region.

“I am very proud of the students and instructors that strive for excellence in the nursing programs at Minnesota West Community & Technical College. These honors and significant achievements tell a story about the quality education we have in our communities,” commented Dawn Gordon, Dean of Nursing & Sciences.

Free Application Month

9/17/18

Minnesota West is gearing up for College Knowledge Month!  Minnesota West celebrates College Knowledge Month by waiving application fees for all prospective students for the entire month of October 2018!

October is College Knowledge Month statewide in Minnesota!

A little background information on College Knowledge Month:
Sponsored by K12, higher education and nonprofit partners, the goal of College Knowledge Month is to provide every graduating high school senior with the preparation, opportunity, and support needed to apply to college.

College Knowledge Month. Explore. Plan. Apply!

Applying is only one step of the college application process - the result of thoughtful exploration and planning. With this time frame, students can participate in the process at their own pace - and schools can align this initiative with the many college exploration activities that are already taking place in the fall of the academic year. The objectives of this project are as follows:

  • To help schools establish and/or build upon a culture of college-readiness.
  • To communicate to all students the importance of preparing for and applying to college.
  • To engage and inform underrepresented students (first-generation college students, students of color, and low-income students) about post-secondary opportunities, culminating in the application process.
  • To provide a statewide message and excitement about exploring and planning for college.
  • To increase the number of Minnesota seniors who complete the college admissions process.

To wrap up College Knowledge Month, many colleges and universities across the state waive application fees in October, including Minnesota West.

Free Application Week 2017

free application week10/4/17

Minnesota West will be participating in College Knowledge Month by waiving our application fee from October 23-27, 2017.

College Knowledge Month's goal is to provide every graduating high school senior with the preparation, opportunity, and support needed to apply to college. This statewide effort has occurred annually during the month of October since 2011.

This month-long effort allows students to do more than just submit a college application. Within this time frame, students can participate in the college exploration and planning process at their own pace -- and schools can align this initiative with the many college exploration activities that are already taking place during the fall.

College Knowledge Month aims to:

  • Help schools establish and/or build upon a culture of college-readiness.
  • Communicate to all students the importance of preparing for and applying to college.
  • Engage and inform underrepresented students (first-generation college students, students of color, and low-income students) about postsecondary opportunities, culminating in the application process.
  • Provide a statewide message and excitement about exploring and planning for college.
  • Increase the number of Minnesota seniors who complete the college admissions process.

Pharmacy Technology

Program Requirements

Assessment Test
Students must complete the Accuplacer Assessment tests in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to registering for courses at Minnesota West. Students may be exempt from the test if they have adequate ACT scores or prior college experience. Students entering the Pharmacy Technology program must meet the following minimum program entry requirements:

  • Reading Comprehension: score of 50+ or a grade of C or better in STSK 0090

  • Math: score of 51+ on the Elementary Algebra, or a 40+ on the College Level Math test, or a grade of C or better in Math 0098

Testing dates and times are available online at www.mnwest.edu/orientation-registration/assessment.

Clinical Health Requirements
It is recommended that each student is up-to-date on all immunizations including the Hepatitis B vaccination within the first two months of beginning the program. The immunization form is available online at www.mnwest.edu/student-forms.

In the event of conflicts with this recommendation, a student shall fill out an immunization waiver. In addition, healthcare CPR and a health physical by a physician will need to be completed. A TB skin test will also be required before the first internship site can be assigned to the student. The TB skin test will be repeated annually.

Background Study Requirements for Students in Clinical\Internship Programs
In 1995, amendments were added to the Vulnerable Adults Act which affects students in clinical placements at facilities licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health. The amendments require that individuals who provide direct contact services to patients, residents or client in licensed facilities must undergo a background study. Direct contact is defined a s providing face to face care, training, supervision, counseling, consultation, or medication assistance to people receiving services from the agency or facility. Facilities affected by this law are as follows:

  • Home Care Agencies

  • Residential Care Homes

  • Licensed Child Care Facilities

  • Hospitals

  • Boarding Care Homes

  • Outpatient Surgical Centers

  • Nursing Homes

  • Board and lodging establishments providing supportive or health services

The Commissioner of Human Services is authorized to conduct studies initiated by educational programs that train persons providing direct contact services in licensed facilities. Annual background studies of students in clinical placements are required. Background study results may be transferred from one licensed facility to another.

Students must be informed of the following:
State law requires that any person who provides services that involve direct contact with patients and residents at a health care facility have a background study conducted by the State. An individual who is disqualified from having direct contact as a result of the background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, will not be permitted to participate in a clinical placement in a health care facility. Failure to participate in a clinical placement required by the academic program would result in ineligibility to qualify for a degree in this program. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=245C.15

What is a Federal Perkins Loan?  (The Perkins Loan is no longer available.)

Do I need to do anything to accept my financial aid?
Your grant funds and other gift aid will automatically be applied to your account at Minnesota West. You will need to apply for any loans that you are eligible for. You can do that on your e Services Student Account.

What is a book voucher and how do I know if I qualify for one?
If you have submitted a valid FAFSA to Minnesota West, you are eligible to use a book voucher to purchase required textbooks. If your financial aid does not completely cover the cost of your books, you will be required to pay the balance owed. To use a book voucher please visit the online book site and at the payment processing screen, select payment type "Fin Aid/3rd pty/VA/PSEO/Nelnet".  You will need to know your 8 digit numerical ID. When making your purchase, if you are eligible, the system will allow the charge to be placed on your student account. For more information on Books, please go to the bookstore

When will I get my financial aid overage check/direct deposit?
If your financial aid paperwork is complete, your funds will be disbursed on the Financial Aid Overage Disbursement date found on the student calendar.

Please note:

  • All federal student loan requests are split into 2 disbursements (Fall and Spring) as we assume you will be attending both semesters.
  • Semester-only loans must be split into two disbursements. Half the loan amount will be disbursed starting the third week of classes. The other half will be disbursed mid-way through the semester.
  • First-time loan borrowers must wait 30 days after the start of the term before the first disbursement can apply to their student account.

How do I know if I qualify for work study?
If you indicated on your FAFSA that you were interested in Work Study AND you qualify, your Award Letter will reflect the amount you are eligible to earn.  If you have any questions contact a Resource Specialist or the Communication Center.

Will my financial aid be affected if I withdraw from one or all of my classes?
You receive financial aid based on the number of credits that you are taking so any change in your credits may affect the amount of aid that you are eligible to receive. You may have to return funds that were previously disbursed to you. If you withdraw after 60% of the semester is over, you may not have to return your financial aid. Check with your Advisor to discuss your individual situation before you withdraw from any classes.

What is an overaward?
Federal and State regulations prohibit you from receiving financial assistance that exceeds your calculated financial need or the cost of attending Minnesota West. Therefore, if you receive additional assistance that we were not aware of when we processed your application, you may be overawarded and we may reduce, cancel or collect back some of your awards.

No interest is charged on a subsidized Direct Loan while you are in school attending at least half-time. Interest does not begin to accumulate until after your 6-month grace period after you cease enrollment. An unsubsidized Direct Loan begins accruing interest immediately after you receive the funds.

Minnesota West Online

Should I Take an Online Class?

Online learning is not for everyone. Certain work habits, learning styles, and skills contribute to a successful online learning experience.

Use the following self-assessment
to help you determine if you are ready to take an online class from Minnesota West. The assessment covers both technical as well as learning style considerations.

This is strictly a self-assessment tool, so give yourself honest answers.

Learning Style Considerations

  • Are you self-starter, able to motivate yourself to work?
  • Do you enjoy working and learning on your own, rather than as a part of a group?
  • Can you budget your time and set schedules for yourself to get work completed on time?
  • Are you willing to speak up when you have a question?
  • Do you usually read and understand the textbook without help?
  • Can you communicate adequately in writing? Can you understand and follow instructions given in writing rather than orally?
  • Are you comfortable participating in a class where you are not physically present and may not know the instructor or the other students?

Technical Considerations

  • Are you comfortable with using computers?
  • Do you know how to print documents from a computer?
  • Do you have basic navigation skills such as minimizing and maximizing Windows, and browsing back and forward?
  • Are you able to create, save, and manage files on your computer?
  • Are you comfortable installing or upgrading computer software?
  • Do you have word processing skills?
  • Can you copy and paste text or graphics across applications using the clipboard?
  • Are you comfortable using email, including sending and receiving attachments?
  • Do you know how to find information on the Internet?
  • If you do not have your own computer, can you get to campus to use the computer lab or arrange to use some other computer at least two hours per day?

A majority of "yes" answers
indicates that you are a good candidate for success in an online class. A few "no" answers may point out areas that you should strengthen or address, but you may still decide that an online class is a good choice for you.

Many "no" answers
may indicate that your chances for success would be greater in a traditional class setting at this time. As your skills and experience grow, you may decide to revisit the option of online learning.

If after answering these questions you are still unsure
if an online class is right for you, contact the instructor of the class you are interested in taking. You can also take the free Introduction to Online Learning class. Contact the d2ladmin@mnwest.edu and ask to be enrolled.

Financial Aid

Net Price Calculator

The Net Price Calculator is a tool for students and parents to use to get an estimate of what it may cost to attend Minnesota West.

  • The information you receive from the calculator is an estimate of costs and financial aid.

  • The estimate assumes that you will be a degree seeking undergraduate student enrolled fulltime (12 or more credits) in fall and spring semesters.

How does the calculator work?

  • The calculator uses information on the typical cost of attending Minnesota West, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, living expenses, transportation and personal expenses.
  • Your actual costs will vary depending on your major, the courses you select and your living arrangements.

  • Using family financial information that you enter, the calculator will estimate the amount of grant and scholarship financial aid that similar students received in the previous year.

Go to Net Price Calculator now!

Things to keep in mind.

  • The Net Price Calculator can only provide an estimate of costs and financial aid. It is not a final determination or actual award of financial assistance or a final net price.

  • Financial aid award packages are determined after a student has submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) indicating the Minnesota West FAFSA school code 005263.

  • For more information on applying for Federal student aid, go to http://www.studentaid.gov .

International Students: After Your Arrival

When you arrive in Minnesota from your home country, you should report to the Worthington campus as soon as possible for a document check with the international student advisor. At that time, you will enroll for health insurance and register for your classes.

The College provides several support services to help students succeed. In addition to providing accommodations for disabilities, available services include tutoring, help with study skills, computer assistance, and more. If you believe you could profit from such services, complete the support services form and return it to your campus student services office.

Most international students attend classes on the Worthington campus, but some choose technical programs that are located on one of the other campuses.

Employment

Students may work on campus, or for a college-related business off campus, up to 20 hours per week during the school year. There are two components that must be met for qualified on-campus employment:

  • Limits on the type and location of the employment, and
  • Limited to jobs that do not displace a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Work on campus does not mean work-study, which is a form of financial aid. Under no circumstances may first year students work on or off campus for a non-college related business.

Off-campus employment may be authorized in the second year of study only in cases of severe economic hardship occurring subsequent to enrollment in an academic program or in emergent circumstances as defined by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  Off-campus employment must be approved by both the college and DHS.

Housing

Campus housing lists are available on each campus informational site.

Transportation

A limited taxi service operates in Worthington, but no city buses or shuttles are available. Public transportation in rural communities in the United States is rare. Students who don't drive cars will need to find alternative forms of travel to College campuses, such as riding with friends, walking or riding bicycles.

Your College Classes

Minnesota West offers some it its classes through ITV, in which a series of television monitors and computers allow students at multiple campuses to participate in a class with one instructor. Many online classes are also offered. Students may use their personal computers or use the computers located on campus to take any online classes.

International students are required to take a minimum of 12 credits, which is typically four to six classes. Those classes might be a mix of regular classroom, ITV, and online.  At least 9 of those credits must be face-to-face classes (regular classroom or ITV).  Additional credits may be selected from regular classroom, ITV, or online courses.

The international student advisor will assist you in choosing classes that work best for your area of study and your preferred learning style.

PSEO: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is PSEO?

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options is a state-sponsored program that allows qualified sophomores, juniors and seniors to take college-level courses that apply to both high school graduation requirements and a college degree. It is intended to increase the range and depth of academic options for high school students.

How can PSEO benefit me?
Is PSEO right for me?
When do I have to decide if I want to do PSEO?
What classes can I take?
When do I register for college classes?
Do I follow the high school calendar or the college calendar for the first day of classes?
Can I participate in college activities?
How much does it cost?
How often do I meet with my high school counselor?
How often do I meet with a Minnesota West counselor?
Do I have to maintain a certain GPA?
What is the maximum number of credits I can register for each semester?
What if I haven’t taken the ACT or SAT yet?
Will I be treated differently because I am a PSEO student?
What about Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses?
What is FERPA, and how does it apply to PSEO students?
Will being a PSEO student impact my ability to access free/reduced lunch?
Additional PSEO Resources

  How can PSEO benefit me?
  1. College credits taken while in high school may be counted toward high school and college graduation, once these credits are accepted by the post-secondary institution.

  2. PSEO lets you take courses that may not be available at your high school.

  3. Save money on your college education: your tuition, books, and lab fees are covered as part of your high school education.

  4. Try your hand at college-level courses without having the added stress of adjusting to life post high school.

  5. Potentially reduce the time (and money) required to earn a post-secondary credential.

  6. Explore a career path: either get a head start on the course requirements for a specific career or narrow down which field of study is right for you.

  7. Getting a jump on your undergraduate credential allows earlier entry into more advanced courses, facilitation of double majors, or permitting additional electives.

Is PSEO right for me?

With a wide variety of courses - in terms of both content and delivery method – many students will be able to find an option that is right for them. Successful students often demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Maturity.
  • Self-discipline.
  • A strong academic background.
  • Good study skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity.
  • Flexibility.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Independence.
  • Motivation to get a head start on college.
When do I have to decide if I want to do PSEO!

Enrolling in the PSEO program is a very important decision. Make an appointment with your high school counselor to discuss your career plans and review your high school graduation requirements. Take the time to seek out information about becoming a PSEO student from college counselors, fellow students, faculty, and staff. When you have decided, be sure to follow our PSEO Application Process. May 30 is the deadline to notify your school that you plan to participate in PSEO.

What classes can I take?

Visit with your high school counselor to determine what kind of courses you need to complete your requirements for your diploma. After those requirements are met, you can take electives in areas of interest to you. The Minnesota Legislature established this program on a "space-available" basis. This means you will register after regularly admitted students, so you may not always get your first choice. Developmental - courses numbered below 1000 - as well as some major-specific classes, are not available to PSEO students.

When do I register for college classes?

The first day to register for fall semester is March 1 each year; the first day to register for the spring semester is November 1 each year.

Do I follow the high school calendar or the college calendar for the first day of classes?

You must follow the college academic calendar for all dates - first day of class, holidays, last day of the semester.  Even though your high school classes may start at a later date, you must attend your classes at the college beginning with the first day of the college semester.  This includes online classes - you must log in and start your online class(es) on the first day of the college semester.

Can I participate in college activities?

All Minnesota West activities (such as art, music, campus clubs) are open to PSEO students. If interested in inter-collegiate athletics, you must visit with the Minnesota West Athletic Director about eligibility. You can also continue to participate in your high school's extra-curricular activities if you prefer.

How much does it cost?

You will not be charged for tuition, fees, or required textbooks. These expenses are covered as part of your high school education. Private music lesson fees and other additional course fees are the responsibility of the student.

How often do I meet with my high school counselor?

You must meet with your high school counselor every semester to complete the notice of student registration form. You need to work closely with your high school counselor to ensure that the college courses you take will meet your high school graduation requirements.

How often do I meet with a Minnesota West counselor?

You are required to meet with a Minnesota West counselor at a PSEO orientation session and again during your first semester prior to registering for your second semester. After completing your first semester, you must meet with a Minnesota West counselor every semester or as needed.

Do I have to maintain a certain GPA?

You are responsible for maintaining satisfactory academic progress and adhering to all college policies. To remain in good standing in the PSEO program, a PSEO student must maintain satisfactory academic progress according to College Policy 2.9 Satisfactory Progress Standards.

“1. Qualitative Measure
All students are required to maintain an acceptable grade point average (GPA). The minimum standard is progressive based on cumulative registered credits and is detailed below.

Grades of A,B,C,D, and F will be included in calculating a student's GPA.

Cumulative Registered Credits . Minimum Required GPA
0 - 5   0.00
6 - 15   1.60
16 - 30   1.80
31+   2.0

2. Quantitative Measures
A.   Required Completion Percentage:  Students are required to complete a minimum of all attempted credits as follows:

Cumulative Registered  Credits . Minimum Completeion Percentage
0 - 5   0.00%
6 +   67%

The completion percentage will be reviewed after the end of each term. Grades of Incomplete (I), Failing (F), Ceased to attend (FW), Withdraw (W), No Credit (NC) or No Grade Assigned (Z) do not count toward satisfactory completion but as attempted credits.”

What is the maximum number of credits I can register for each semester?

Each semester you may register for up to 16 credits. You must be enrolled less than full-time in high school while participating in the PSEO program.

What if I haven’t taken the ACT or SAT yet?

ACT & SAT scores will be taken into consideration if available, but are not required for PSEO admission. We use multiple measures to determine PSEO eligibility. If ACT or SAT scores are not available please contact an academic advisor to determine need for an Accuplacer assessment test.

Will I be treated differently because I am a PSEO student?

In short, no. We consider you to be no different from any other new student on campus. You are not identified to our instructors; therefore you will be treated as any other college student at Minnesota West. You are entitled to the same privileges as our Minnesota West students; all campus activities, programs, and clubs are available to you. No one will know that you are a PSEO student unless you decide to tell them.

What about Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses?

AP and IB courses are offered at many high schools and provide a rigorous curriculum that prepares students to take college level courses. They are not true PSEO options, but may still be beneficial for your educational journey. Students who achieve a 3 or higher on an Advanced Placement test can have that score evaluated by a college or university for a college credit. Students who attain an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma shall be granted six (6) lower division course credits for scores of 4 or higher on each Higher Level IB. Talk to your school counselor to see if these options are available in your school, and a good fit for you.

What is FERPA, and how does it apply to PSEO students?

View our FERPA FAQs for PSEO Students for more information on this law and how it applies to PSEO students.

Will being a PSEO student impact my ability to access free/reduced lunch?

No. The Food and Nutrition Services division at Minnesota Department of Education confirmed that high schools are required to provide lunch for their free/reduced lunch students, which includes both part-time and full-time PSEO students. The process for this varies by school, so students should contact their high school counselor or principal to see what options are available. Students who run into an issue with this should call (for a more expedient response) the Food and Nutrition Help Line at 651-582-8526 or toll free 800-366-8922, or email mde.fns@state.mn.us.

Radiologic Technology Program

The Radiologic Technology Program begins once a year at the beginning of the fall semester. The radiography curriculum is two years (24 continuous months) in length and graduates are awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S). Many radiography students choose to complete their general education credits prior to beginning the program courses.

The application window for the Fall 2024 program has passed.

Application Process
  1. Complete the online Minnesota West Application for Admission. Indicate Radiologic Technology as a program major.

  2. Complete the online Radiologic Technology Program Application, indicating the year you wish to start.
  3. Transcripts: Official high school and college transcripts must be sent directly to the Luverne Campus (see address below). If you previously attended an institution that is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, you may not need to request a transcript. If you apply online, you will be notified immediately if you need to request your own transcript manually. The Registrar will evaluate transcripts for course currency upon admission to the program.

  4. Optional supplemental assessment material includes submitting official ACT results.

  5. Assessment Testing: Minnesota West has mandatory placement in courses based on the Accuplacer. Test information and sample questions are available for your review purposes.  This test can be scheduled through the Luverne Center by calling 507-449-2772.

Note: Forms listed on this page require Acrobat Reader. Go here for free Acrobat Reader download.

All application materials should be submitted to:

Required Prerequisites

All prerequisite courses are available at any Minnesota West campus or center and online. All prerequisites must be completed prior to starting the program.

  • Successful completion of BIOL 2245, Medical Terminology, or equivalent transfer course.

  • Successful completion of RADT 1105, Radiographic Basics.

  • Successful completion of BIOL 2201, Anatomy, or equivalent transfer course.

Selection Process

Admission to the Radiologic Technology program is competitive. Applicants who have met the minimum admission requirements by the deadline will be reviewed for admission to the program.

Admission to the program is determined by a screening committee based on the following criteria:

  • Applicants will be scored and ranked by number.

  • Applicants will be given points for each prerequisite and general education course completed and will also be granted points for their respective GPAs.

  • Students who have previously applied to the program and/or who have completed observation in a radiology department will also be granted points.

  • Students have the option of submitting their official ACT scores. Students will be awarded points if they choose to submit; however, they are not required.

  • Students with the highest number of points will be accepted into the program.

See Applicant Assessment Score Sheet.

Written notification will be sent in March to all applicants. The accepted students will be required to attend a mandatory orientation in April in order to maintain their position in the program.

All accepted students will be required to pass two background studies in order to be placed into clinicals and to sit for the national ARRT board exam upon completion of the program. Details will be discussed at the orientation. See below for information on the required background studies.

State of Minnesota Background Study

Minnesota Law requires any person who provides a service that involves direct contact with patients and residents in healthcare facilities licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health to have a background study conducted by the state. An individual who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of a background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, will not be permitted to participate in a clinical placement in a Minnesota-licensed health care facility. Failure to participate in a clinical placement required by the academic program will result in ineligibility to qualify for a degree in the program.

ARRT Background Study

When determining eligibility for examination, the ARRT requires that the applicant be of good moral character. Conviction of a crime, including a felony or a gross misdemeanor, with the sole exception of speeding and parking violations is considered to be a violation of the Standards of Ethics. Such violations must be cleared by the ARRT before the applicant can be assigned to an examination. The ARRT Ethics Pre-Application Review is reserved for those who:

Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

Minnesota’s PSEO program allows students to get a jump-start on earning college credits by taking college courses while still in high school. Students can take college courses tuition-free, saving both time and money on completing a post-secondary credential. PSEO courses may also fulfill high school requirements.

There are several different types of PSEO courses available:

On Campus and Online Courses

Juniors and seniors can travel to a Minnesota West campus or take Minnesota West courses online. If students are interested in attending Minnesota West, traveling to a campus can help them determine if Minnesota West will be a good fit. Students planning to attend a 4-year institution after high school can also benefit from exposure to a college campus. If traveling is not an option, taking online courses will still help students acclimate themselves to the college environment. In either case, students are not identified to instructors as PSEO. *Piano Lessons and Voice Lessons are not available to PSEO students (MUSC 1140, 1141, 1156, 1146, 2140, 2141, 2146, and 2146).

REACH program (PSEO Concurrent Enrollment)

The REACH program allows high school juniors and seniors to take Minnesota West courses in their high schools. The courses are taught by their pre-approved high school teachers who partner with faculty members from the college.

Under certain circumstances, students in grade 9 or 10 may also be allowed to take concurrent enrollment courses. Students should contact their high school counselor for more information.

ICAN Project - Limited Opportunity Fall 2024

Free PSEO course through ICAN grant – Composition I.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Options

High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can take one career and technical course on a Minnesota West campus, at their local high school, or online. To be eligible, they must:

  • have a minimum of a “proficient” score on the 8th grade Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) test for reading, and
  • meet the assessment prerequisites set for the specific course they are interested in.
If a student successfully completes the course with a C or higher, the student can take additional PSEO CTE courses, provided course prerequisites are met. Students who first enter PSEO programming through career and technical education can also begin to take PSEO general education courses in grades 11 and 12 by meeting the assessment prerequisites for the general education course they wish to enroll in, regardless of class rank or percentile on a nationally normed exam.

CTE courses may also be available to students through LYFT Pathways. Launch Your Future Today (LYFT) is a rural career and technical education pathway initiative with the purpose of rebuilding CTE in southwest and west central Minnesota. The goal of LYFT Pathways is for every secondary student in the region to gain marketable skills through meaningful CTE courses and opportunities which lead to further education and careers that match our region’s labor market needs. The LYFT website lists eligible schools and their available courses.

Minnesota West also partners with the Minnesota River Valley CTE Collaborative to provide opportunities for students to gain skills, knowledge, and experience in technical careers. MRV CTEC serves students in these school districts: Lakeview, MACCRAY, Montevideo, Renville County West, and Yellow Medicine East. More information is available at https://mrvctec.com/

Step 2
Gather your Social Security number, your Income Tax Return, and your parent’s Income Tax Return (if you are under 24 and not married).

Unsubsidized Loans - This aid has to be paid back and interest accrues while you are in school.
Work Study - This is on-campus employment.  Contact a Resource Specialist to see if you qualify.

Step 8
To request your loans, go to your e_Services Student Account, select Financial Aid and then Loans. Go to each tab across the top of the screen to complete all of the loan application steps. You can also use this site to check on the status of your loan application at any time.

Step 9
Text books may be purchased using a book voucher if you have submitted a valid FAFSA to Minnesota West. Check the bookstore for dates that book vouchers are available.

Step 10
Your financial aid is applied towards your college account at the Business Office after the start of the term. You can receive any overage money by either direct deposit (into your bank account) or by a check. Paper checks will be mailed to the permanent address on your student record. Financial Aid

Student Responsibilities

Federal and state regulations require that all students maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to be eligible to receive financial aid. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage all students to progress steadily at a reasonable rate toward graduation.

  • Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

  • Students must apply annually for financial assistance to demonstrate need.

  • Students are responsible for notifying the Financial Aid Office of any scholarships they will be receiving from outside sources.

  • Students must be enrolled for all courses by the drop/add deadline each term.

  • Students must provide accurate and factual information including changes such as withdrawal from school, reduction of number of credits below full-time status, any change in name or address, defaulting on and/or owing a refund of Title IV funds to any institution.

  • Students must be accepted and enrolled in a degree or certificate program.

Financial aid is provided for the purpose of attending school. It is the responsibility of each recipient to use his/her financial aid for educational purposes and carefully manage the funds provided.

Considering withdrawal from the college?

A portion of all aid received must be refunded to the appropriate aid programs upon partial or full withdrawal from school.

If you are receiving any type of federal financial aid (grants or loans), your withdrawal prior to the 60% point in the term may cause a repayment of funds received and can prevent you from receiving federal financial aid in the future. Students who are in default on any education loan will be denied financial aid.

A total withdrawal may also impact your ability to enroll at Minnesota West Community & Technical College in the future. If you have a student loan, you need to complete an exit counseling per the U.S. Department of Education Policies. Exit Counseling

You are advised to discuss this with your advisor prior to withdrawing.

Student Employment - Work Study

Minnesota West has student employment positions available on each campus and center location. Jobs available include working in the LARC, office/clerical work, maintenance, computer lab, technical program assistance, athletic department, faculty assistants, etc. We also offer off-campus positions working for non-profit organizations.

To apply for work study, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and indicate an interest in work study funding. If work study is listed on your Award Letter, you are eligible to apply for a position. It does not guarantee that you will find a job or be able to earn the whole amount. If work study is not listed on your Award Letter, you may still be eligible. Contact a Resource Specialist or the Communication Center to find out if you qualify.

Eligibility Requirements: Students must have a financial need based on FAFSA data.

Wage Rate:  Positions are paid at $15 per hour. Please check the job title descriptions for more information. Students cannot work during regularly scheduled classes.

Timesheets:  Every other Wednesday by 2:00 p.m., timesheets must be submitted via e-Services in order to be processed timely. Students are paid bi-weekly via direct deposit.

How do I find a work study position?
  1. Complete the online Work Study Job Application Form.

  2. Print the payroll forms below:
    1. Work Study Contract and Confidentiality Agreement (supervisor and student need to sign).
    2. Student Work Study Handbook.
    3. I-9 Employment Form, Instructions for completing I-9 Form.
    4. W-4 Form.
    5. W-4MN Form.

  3. Student employment - workstudy positions are listed on the website.

  4. When you have been offered employment, you must meet with your supervisor to determine your work schedule and sign the confidentiality agreement.

  5. Bring the confidentiality agreement and two forms of identification with you, such as a driver’s license and social security card, to your campus and meet with the resource specialist to complete your payroll forms (I-9 and W-4). You cannot begin work until the payroll forms have been completed.

  6. Sign up for direct-deposit on your student account.  You can print a copy of the payroll calendar  for your records. It will be your responsibility to record your hours worked on your e-timesheet. Remember…you cannot work during regularly scheduled class time.

FAQs

How do I apply for scholarships?  When the scholarship application window is open, an “apply now” button will be available on this page.  Also, see tutorial video above.

When and how will I hear if I was awarded a Minnesota West scholarship?  You will be notified via the email you used to apply for the scholarships.  Notification emails will occur in May (for fall term) and in December (spring term).  Recipients must accept the scholarship using the link in that email.

When will my Minnesota West Scholarship be awarded? Minnesota West Foundation-based scholarships will apply to your student account within two weeks of the start of the term, along with any other need-based aid, such as Pell Grants and student loans.

Where can I view my scholarship awards?  You can view your scholarship awards in e-Services under the “Financial Aid” tab and then under the “Awards” tab.

Why aren't my awards applied to my tuition balance yet?  When a scholarship is placed on your student account it will not automatically subtract from your tuition balance due. You can view your balance due by going to: e-Services, then “Bills and Payment”. You will need to calculate your total balance due by subtracting your Financial Aid and Scholarship Awards from your tuition balance. The amount remaining is what you owe. There are four ways to pay tuition:

For example:
You go under the “Financial Aid” tab then under “Awards” and see you have a $1,000 scholarship and $500 in financial aid. Your total awards = $1,500. Then you go under “Bills and Payments” and see your tuition Balance is $2,000.
$2,000 Balance – $1,500 Awards = $500 Due
After paying the $500 due, you will still have a tuition balance due of $1,500 until aid applies. Once aid applies on the ninth day of the semester your tuition balance due should be $0.
Financial aid and scholarships are disbursed after the last day to add/drop classes each semester. You will see your awards applied to your tuition balance at this time.  Aid and scholarships are applied on the 9th day of the term and they are dispersed starting on the 11th day of the term.

What should I do with a scholarship check I received outside of Minnesota West? (External Scholarships)? If you have an external scholarship check please include the following information before mailing or delivering your check to campus:

  • Information to include with the check – this can be written on a separate piece of paper:
    • Your student Tech ID (8-digit number)
    • Your full name
    • Any documents that came with the check
    • Is the check “payable” to you (the student)?
      • If yes, sign the back of the check.

How do I reset my login to the Scholarship App or find my scholarships? If students cannot locate their email that apprises them of the scholarship and the needed steps to complete to accept, follow these steps:

  • Log into the scholarship software (student will see that they have an award waiting to be accepted)
  • Here is the log-in link:  https://mnwest.academicworks.com/users/sign_in
  • Student should use the email address that they provided on the application.
  • If student has forgotten password, they will need to reset it using the “Trouble signing in “link
  • If your login is still not working, you can email scholarships@mnwest.edu for assistance

I applied for scholarships in the Fall but am eligible for awards in the spring, do I need to re-apply?  No, you do not need to re-apply.  The scholarship software will match you to any eligible scholarships.  However, you may need to log in and update your application.

Federal Direct Loan Information

The Federal Direct Loan Program provides students the opportunity to be awarded Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan funds. The Department of Education acts as the lender, providing funds for the Direct Loan Program and transferring those dollars to Minnesota West to be applied toward your account. Students must be registered at least 6 credits at the time your loan is certified and discursed by Minnesota West.

To accept the Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans that you have been awarded, you must:
  1. Login in to your e-Services Student Account, using your StarID and password.

  2. Under the Financial Aid Tab, select "Loan."

  3. Read and follow all steps.

  4. Take the necessary steps to complete your Master Promissory Note and the Entrance Counseling.

Additional Federal Direct Loan Information

Subsidized and Unsubsidized Differences:

  • Subsidized Federal Direct Loans are need-based, long-term loans. Interest and principle on subsidized loans are deferred as long as the student carries at least a half time credit load. The interest rate is 5.5%.

  • Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans are similar to Subsidized Federal Direct Loans except that only the principle is deferred while the borrower is enrolled in school. The interest must either be paid during the in-school period or the interest will accrue and be added to the principle balance. The interest rate is 5.5%.

A Federal Direct Loan is a loan, not a grant. This loan must be repaid. Before you borrow, determine your budget. Do you need loan funds to meet your educational costs? How much do you need? Don’t just borrow because the funds are available.  Remember, you will have to repay these funds.

Fees: A loan fee of  1.057% of the principle amount will be deducted from the loan disbursement. The fee helps reduce the cost of making these low-interest loans. The loan amount you receive will be less than the amount you have to repay.

Repayment of Principle: When a student graduates or ceases to be enrolled at least half time, a six-month grace period begins. During the grace period, interest begins to accrue on Unsubsidized Student Loans.

Loan Eligibility:
  -  Your loan eligibility is based on the types of aid you will be receiving on your award letter. If you become eligible for additional funding such as scholarships, third party funding, etc., your loan eligibility may decrease. As a result, you may have to repay part of your loan funds to the college if you have already received the loan funds, or may see future loan amounts decreased.

  -  Your loan may require proration (a reduction in what you are eligible to borrow) if your final period of enrollment at Minnesota West is just one semester or your program length is less than 24 credits. Therefore, the amount listed on your award letter may be higher than your actual remaining eligibility. The amount will be revised at the time the college certifies your loan.

First Time Loan Borrowers:  Federal Regulations require that the first disbursement of your loan be delayed until after the 30th day of the semester. After accepting your loan(s), please review the disclosure statement sent from the Department of Education.

Loans Accepted for One (1) Semester:  Must be released in two disbursements - one at the beginning of the term and another at the mid-point of the term. If you accept a loan for one semester, please plan accordingly. Note:  Summer semester loans will always be disbursed in two payments.

Limits

Borrowing Limits for Federal Direct Loans are determined by the federal government and are the same at all education institutions. The combined Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan limits per year per grade level are:

  • Freshmen - $5,500 (subsidized may not exceed $3500)

  • Sophomore - $6,500  (subsidized may not exceed $4500)

Independent students may borrow additional funds under the Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan program.

Aggregate Federal Direct Loan Limits: The Federal government limits the total amount of loan funds students are allowed to borrow throughout their educational career. These limits are a combination of Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans.

  • Dependent Undergraduate Student - $31,000 (subsidized may not exceed $23,000)

  • Independent Undergraduate Student - $57,500  (subsidized may not exceed $23,000)

*Note - Grade classification is determined by the number of earned credits at the time your award letter is prepared, not how many years you have attended college.  0-29 credits = Freshman, 30+ credits = Sophomore

Financial Aid

Loans

Loans are money you borrow at a low interest rate and usually repay after your education is completed. Three types of loans are available: federal, state, and private.

  • Semester-only loans must be split into two disbursements. Half the loan amount will be disbursed starting the third week of classes. The other half will be disbursed mid-way through the semester.

  • First-time loan borrowers must wait 30 days after the start of the term before the first disbursement can apply to their student account.

Check the Student Calendar for disbursement dates and other important dates.

Federal Loans

The federal loan program requires students and parents (for dependent students) to apply for financial aid with the FAFSA. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) to qualify for federal loans. There are three types of federal loans.

After completing the FAFSA, you will receive your award letter from Minnesota West stating which federal loans are available for you. You may choose to borrow some, all, or none of the amounts listed. Complete instructions below for your specific award:

Minnesota Loans

Minnesota SELF Loan is a long-term, low-interest educational loan primarily for Minnesota students who need assistance paying for education beyond high school. Because the SELF program is not subsidized by the federal or state government, a credit-worthy co-signer is needed to insure continuous repayment on the loan. The Minnesota SELF Loan website provides information and will guide you through the application process.

Private Loans

Many banks and credit unions provide educational loan options, commonly referred to as private loans. These loans may have higher interest rates than federal loans and generally should be considered as a borrowing option after you have considered federal loans. Go to the FASTChoice website to compare private loans and then contact your lender for a loan application.
