Mayo Clinic Nursing Opportunities in Fairmont

4/19/19

Minnesota West Nursing program and Mayo Clinic Health System serve a large geographical region in southern Minnesota. This geography includes the areas in which Minnesota West students live and work.  Most recently, Mayo Clinic Health System has invited Minnesota West to expand presence in the Fairmont area.

Mayo Clinic Health System has a strategic priority in hiring LPNs, as evidenced by recently having established an LPN Recruitment Task Force for the Midwest. The Minnesota West online practical nursing option for didactic courses serves learners living and working in remote areas well.

Mayo Clinic Health System values the additional capacity the college provides with both the Associate degree and Practical Nursing program provides.

Jane Foote, Mayo Clinic Health System Academic Affairs Program Director Midwest notes, “The importance of these two programs maintaining accreditation status, and providing leadership in this region is tremendous. Because of the proximity to Iowa and the limited number of accredited programs in that state, having access to high quality programs is essential for the regional workforce. Mayo Clinic Health System only hires new graduates of accredited nursing programs.”

Carol Reichel, Nursing Education Specialist at Mayo Clinic Health System adds, “We are dedicated to creating valuable partnerships to help develop as well as recruit our future workforce.  It is an honor to collaborate with Minnesota West and we are thrilled to have a strong nursing program presence in Fairmont.”

Dawn Gordon, Minnesota West Dean Nursing & Sciences comments, “Minnesota West’s nursing programs continue to serve students in the Fairmont region.  We collaborate with Mayo Clinic Health System, Fairmont to continue to meet the nursing workforce needs.  I am pleased that our continued partnership is strong as we offer acceptance to the next class of nursing students.”

Minnesota West recently reviewed and accepted 16 students that will need clinicals in the Fairmont region for their LPN to RN degree.  These 16 students are a dedicated cohort for Minnesota West to support needs in the Fairmont area.

Grant Awarded for Career Pathways

4/10/19

The Greater Twin Cities United Way recently announced support with a grant of $340,000 for a Career Academies Pathways Project. Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Jackson County Central School District, Windom Area School District and Worthington District #518 in conjunction with the Southwest Initiative Foundation have collaborated to expand educational opportunities for high school students.

The partnership focuses on high school students participating in a college class while still in high school in high demand career paths such as Healthcare, Manufacturing, Information Technology and Education. For many students, this opportunity helps them determine interests and career paths, as well as, allowing students to receive college credits.

Dr. Kayla Westra, Minnesota West Dean of Institutional Effectiveness & Liberal Arts comments, “Providing students with career pathways while still in high school helps students envision their future. They can learn more about careers and the skills and coursework needed to work in those fields while still in high school, which helps them streamline their post-secondary options.”

Theresa Ireland, Minnesota West K-12 Collaboration Coordinator stated, “I am looking forward to continuing to support the work being done in the three districts, which will benefit not only their communities, but the whole region.”

“In Worthington, we have a number of high quality opportunities for students to begin earning college credit while still in high school. The Career Academies Pathway Project allows us to give more students a solid understanding of what type of career path they would like to pursue. This project is one of the ways we hope to encourage our young people to find a career they are passionate about and stay within the region to make a positive impact”, adds Josh Noble, Worthington High School Principal.

In 2017-2018 academic year, 120 students in the region were involved in career academy opportunities, the numbers increased to 160 students in 2018-2019. The continuation and expansion of the program with the grant monies will allow for more students to be involved in the pathways.

Powerline Program To Be Offered at Granite Falls

powerline technology gf3/27/19

Minnesota West will begin offering our Powerline Technology at the Granite Falls Campus in July 2019. Currently the Powerline Technology program is offered on the Jackson campus; however, Minnesota West is now adding the satellite Powerline Technology option in Granite Falls to expand the program to serve the workforce and region.

Powerline Technology is a one-year 38 credit diploma program that prepares students to become apprentices in powerline construction and maintenance. Students learn basic skills and applications in transmission and distribution. Persons trained in this field, work for power companies installing and maintaining overhead and underground powerlines. They install equipment such as overvoltage and overcurrent protective devices, transformers, capacitors, and regulators. Powerline technicians are employed by investor owned power companies, consumer owned power companies, municipalities, and by electrical contractors.

Bruce Peterson, Academic Dean of Energy Technologies states, “As the power systems in Minnesota continue to evolve, we see the Southwest region of the state becoming a stronger presence in the power generation sector.

The State continues to reduce its’ dependence on traditional fossil fuel generation and build its resources around renewables. Production of electricity in our region is growing to meet the demand of the more densely populated regions. As a result of electricity production in our region, transmission of that electricity will be a critical factor in the changing state power economy.

Minnesota also has an aging infrastructure in the power grid that needs upgrading and modernization. When you look at how long many of our distribution lines have been providing service to rural areas, you start to gain a sense of the future need for maintenance and replacement needed for many years to come. Society relies on dependable electrical supply. Powerline technicians are the people who will keep that going for years to come.”

On Tuesday, January 29, 2019, Minnesota State Day at the Capitol was held in St. Paul, Minnesota. As one of 37 Minnesota State institutions,

Minnesota West was represented and helped to celebrate all of our campuses and students!

Minnesota State Day at the Capitol featured student success posters from each of our 37 Minnesota State institutions, along with economic impact banners and Minnesota State Campus displays in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building.

Minnesota State trustees, presidents, students, faculty and staff from across the state joined legislators and other government officials at the Capitol for the day.

Minnesota West Student, Melinda Kassandra Lopez, was selected to represent Minnesota West on a poster to showcase our student talent as well as the educational values of our Minnesota State system. Melinda is a student who strongly represents Minnesota West's mission and purpose.

Melinda's story:
I am Melinda Kassandra Lopez and by the age of four, I knew my passion was centered around the medical field. Minnesota West Community & Technical College has been dedicated to helping me achieve my goals while providing the resources that allow me to start making a difference now.

I started PSEO as a sophomore in high school and recently graduated from the practical nursing program (May 2018) at the age of 17. Currently, I am in my last semester of nursing school before graduating in May 2019 with my associate of science degree in nursing. In June, I will be graduating from high school and taking the registered nursing NCLEX. This will make me the first high school student to graduate as a registered nurse in the state of Minnesota.

On campus, I am currently serving my second term as Student Senate President and am the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter President as a member of the All-USA academic team. I look forward to exploring my passions during my undergraduate years as I strive towards medical school.

This will make me the first nursing student to graduate from Minnesota West with my Associates Degree in Nursing at the same time as my high school diploma.

Health Information Technology Receives Initial Accreditation

3/19/19

Minnesota West Community is proud to announce that the Health Information Technology/Management Associate Degree Program has been awarded Initial Accreditation. Initial Accreditation been awarded by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). To receive Initial Accreditation, a comprehensive review was conducted by The CAHIIM and the Board of Directors recognizes the program’s substantial compliance with the nationally established CAHIIM Accreditation Standards.

Terri Petersen, Medical Coding Specialist Instructor, states, "We are so excited to attach the CAHIIM accreditation to our HIT Program.  Accreditation is a way to assure our students that we have met the academic quality and standards in higher education for the Minnesota West Community & Technical College Heath Information Technology Program.  As a CAHIIM accredited program we are able to assure future employers that their future employee has met the professional knowledge and skills and has experienced a curriculum that is pertinent to today's health information records and technology."

“Receiving accreditation from CAHIIM qualifies our students to take the Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) exam through AHIMA. This accreditation is a huge accomplishment for Minnesota West, but more importantly for our students. Our students range from just starting their college experience to returning to school for a new career, we meet all these students on their journey in the HIT program. The future in Health Information is changing and more and more employers are looking for students with education beyond coding; including supervisor skills, quality improvement, and healthcare statistics. Giving students information is not enough, they need to apply, analyze, & create these new skills in ways and methods they would experience in future positions. With CAHIIM accreditation, employers can have confidence in the quality of our program to educate students on the most current trends, but also that student’s gain real-world experience with our Professional Practice Experience at local facilities that employ Health Information Technicians and through virtual training.  In addition to the RHIT, students in the HIT program are able to sit for AHIMA’s coding exams (CCA, CCS, & CCS-P) along with AAPC’s coding exams (CPC, COC, & CIC), states, Elaina Nichols, Health Information Technology Director & Advisor.

Jackie Otkin, Dean of Allied Health, states, “This has been our goal since the program was developed. The faculty have worked hard to write the curriculum with the highest standards to meet the accreditation guidelines as well as our industry requirements and demands.  Our students can sit for the exam with the knowledge and confidence to work in the HIT field.”

Health Information Management Associate Degree is a two-year, 60-credit program that provides hands-on career training and education that prepares students for a variety of careers in the Health Information field. For additional information, visit www.mnwest.edu or call 800-658-2330.

John Kriesel to Speak at Minnesota West

10/26/18
Motivational Speaker, John Kriesel
Wednesday, November 14, 2018
12:00 Noon
Center for Health and Wellness Gymnasium, Worthington campus

A sought after public speaker, John Kriesel travels throughout the country sharing his story, inspiring and motivating others. Kriesel’s intensely positive attitude infects every person he shares his story with from students to senior corporate executives as he relays lessons learned overcoming extreme tragedy.

On December 2, 2006 the vehicle Kriesel and four of his comrades were riding in encountered a 200 lb. Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The blast killed two of Kriesel’s best friends and he was severely injured, losing both legs, suering numerous broken bones and internal injuries. He was transported to two eld hospitals in Iraq where he died three times on the operating table before doctors saved his life. He woke up in Walter Reed Army Medical Center after an 8-day medically induced coma where he learned about the death of his two comrades and the severity of his injuries.

Nine months after his near-death experience in Iraq, John returned to Minnesota to begin his new life. His transition from military to civilian life oered many challenges, but his amazing support system, positive attitude and sense of humor allowed him to bounce back stronger than ever.

During John’s presentation he will describe his decision to join the military at 17 years of age, and his overseas deployments. He will discuss in detail the tragic events of December 2, 2006, and his thoughts and feelings as he laid on a dirt road in Iraq, nearly bleeding to death. He will describe what it was like when he woke up from an 8-day coma in the United States and began his recovery. John’s story, sense of humor, and positive outlook on life will leave your audience inspired.

More About John Kriesel
If Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was writing his incredibly popular book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” today, he would need to add a separate chapter on John Kriesel.

In 2006 Kriesel was nearly blown to shreds by a 200 pound roadside bomb in the parched sands of Iraq, but battlefield angels in army uniforms kept him breathing long enough to reach a field hospital. He died three times and was shocked back to life. Somehow he survived through four hospitals, 35 surgeries and months of recovery. He lost both legs and suered numerous other major injuries, but it was the loss of two close friends that hurt the most.

The guy who wasn’t supposed to survive and was told he probably would be in a wheelchair the rest of his life, walked out of Walter Reed Army Medical Center after nine months. Working with author Jim Kosmo, Kriesel reveals his motivational story in “STILL STANDING: The Story of SSG John Kriesel,” winner of eight national book awards.

Four years after his near-death experience in Iraq Kriesel became a civilian marketing employee with the Minnesota Army National Guard and in 2012 was named Director of Veterans Services for Anoka County.

He also is a part time host on KFAN Sports Radio and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He was elected to the House in 2010 after a vigorous campaign where he was told he could not win in his district. He personally visited several thousand homes in all weather conditions and literally wore out the socket in one of his prosthetic legs. He won.

After tours of duty in Kosovo and Iraq and a lengthy medical recovery Kriesel’s family wanted to spend more time with him and he chose not to run for re-election.

As a legislator he was anything but a quiet freshman challenging even his own party and frequently speaking his mind. “Kriesel’s honesty is a breath of fresh air at the Capitol,” declared the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

In addition to serving veterans in the Twin Cities and being a frequent voice on KFAN’s Power Trip Morning Show, he continues to share his upbeat, motivational message with businesses and organizations throughout the United States.

“Still Standing: The Story of SSG John Kriesel” is available in print, eBook, and audio through Amazon.com, Barnes&  Noble and through our publisher at https://itascabooks.com/.

RACE Exhibit at Minnesota West

9/26/18

The Science Museum of Minnesota will bring a slice of the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition to the Minnesota West this fall!  Worthington will be the first community to host a small-scale version of the award-winning exhibit that changed the way we talk about race and racism in America.

The Science Museum of Minnesota has created a small-scale (450 sq. ft.) version of the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition for communities in greater Minnesota - communities whose residents may not have the opportunity to visit the museum frequently.

Working with community partners to develop complementary events and programs tailored to Worthington’s needs, RACE acts as a catalyst for powerful dialogue that will challenge assumptions and help residents connect with each other in meaningful and constructive ways.

The exhibit opens at the Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Worthington Campus LARC on October 3, 2018 through April 2019. Admission is free and viewing hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Fridays, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and Sundays, 1:00-5:00 p.m. (Sunday LARC hours may vary during the exhibit. For more information, see http://www.mnwest.edu/larc/hours)

“Now, more than ever, we need to increase the quantity and quality of conversations about race in each of our communities. The RACE exhibit serves as a launching point to do just that,” said Alison Brown, President & CEO of the Science Museum of Minnesota.

“We are excited to bring this powerful experience out of the museum and into greater Minnesota. Working with our partners at Minnesota West, we will create safe and productive conversations that are relevant to the needs of the Worthington community,” Brown said.

The original RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition has been seen by more than 4 million people in 51 museums across the country since its debut in 2007. Created in partnership with the American Anthropological Society, the RACE exhibit uses photography, multimedia components, interactive activities, and more to help visitors look at race from three different perspectives - biology, history, and contemporary lived experience. The three perspectives are woven together to tell a compelling story of science with deep and lasting social impact.

The impact of the RACE exhibit is amplified when combined with thoughtful community programming - lectures, discussions, theater programs, art exhibits - that is designed to meet the needs of the people it serves.

The small scale exhibit will travel from Minnesota West to the communities of Moorhead and Rochester in the coming year.

Collaborative Partnerships Result in Opportunities for Education

9/14/18

A partnership between Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Southwest Minnesota State University, and Worthington District #518 was recently awarded two planning grants: one from the McKnight Foundation ($75,000 planning grant) and one from the Southwest Initiative Foundation ($15,000 gap grant) to develop opportunities for teacher education in the Worthington area. The goal is to assist current high school juniors and seniors by providing them with opportunities to prepare for and successfully complete college-level Education courses. The project target students in Worthington District #518, many of whom would be first generation college students.

The project is intended to meet the changing, challenging educational needs of the southwest Minnesota region, which has had a large influx of immigrants in the past 20 years. The children of these immigrants are now in the K-12 school system and ready to begin their post-secondary experiences, whether in the work place or at a college or university. Our goal is to successfully prepare more of these students to enter post-secondary education, and specifically, teacher preparation pathways. Many of these students want to pursue careers in education but feel limited by opportunity, finances, and geography. The intention of the project is to help remove those barriers and generate pathways to access.

The wide variety of cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities that will be served by this project are what make it innovative. The diversity in ethnicity and nationality dramatically increased in the region due to the influx of immigrants and refugees who sought job opportunities and to re-establish familial connections. This demographic shift is exceptionally prominent within Worthington Public School District 518; over 68% of the high school students are from one of over 40 cultures in the area, and over 78% in the elementary schools are students of color. Because the students of Worthington are very diverse, it is important that the teaching ranks of the district also become more diverse.
“Teaching is very rewarding:  you have the opportunity to positively impact hundreds of young people throughout your career. Sharing more about what it means to be a teacher and how to pursue a career in education can help dispel myths and encourage those who are interested in teaching as a profession,” stated Dr. Kayla Westra, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Liberal Arts at Minnesota West. “We are excited to be a part of this partnership with Worthington District #518, Southwest Minnesota State University, the Southwest Initiative Foundation, and the McKnight Foundation. Projects like these are impossible to undertake without collaboration and vision for the region and the people who live here.”

Worthington High School Principal, Josh Noble remarks, “We are very honored to be a part of this opportunity. It is clear this partnership is serious about addressing the teacher shortage in our region. We are committed to creating a grow your own pathway for the next generation of educators. Cultivating an excitement around this profession, diversifying our teacher candidates, and building collaborative partnerships like this will have a far reaching positive impact on our region for years to come.”

“We have a critical shortage of teachers,” said SMSU Provost Dr. Dwight Watson. “We have an emerging immigrant and refugee population within the region, and this will bring opportunities to those students who may want to pursue education as a career goal. This program will also be more representative of teacher candidates that will look like the students in the Worthington classrooms."

Minnesota West students and employees can use their StarID credentials (StarID@go.minnstate.edu or StarID@minnstate.edu) to access the Wi-Fi when visiting participating institutions. Visitors from other eduroam-participating colleges and universities can access the Wi-Fi at participating Minnesota State colleges and universities using the usernames and passwords from their home institutions.

Eduroam serves the goal of improving seamless access across Minnesota State colleges and universities. Instead of wondering how to get access to the guest Wi-Fi, you can simply use eduroam. Once a device is configured to use eduroam, it can automatically join: open your laptop or phone, and go.

Eduroam does not completely replace guest wireless networks, but it does facilitate wireless access for education users, including students and employees of any Minnesota State college or university, and faculty visiting from other higher education institutions.

How to Connect to Eduroam

Before traveling to another Eduroam-participating institution, we recommend signing onto eduroam at your home campus with each device you will be using, to be sure everything works. Connecting involves installing a security certificate.

Connecting to Eduroam
  1. On your device, select eduroam from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  2. You will be prompted to sign onto the network. Enter the following for credentials. Username: StarID@minnstate.edu for employees or StarID@go.minnstate.edu for students (for example, ab1234cd@minnstate.edu). Password: your StarID password.
  3. You may be prompted to accept a security certificate. If this happens, verify the certificate is from radius.mnstate.us. If so, choose OK to accept. If your device asks for more information, use the following settings:
    • Security: 802.1x EAP
    • EAP Method: TTLS
    • Phase-2 Authentication: PAP or GTC
    • Proxy Settings: none
    • IP Settings: DHCPV
    • CA Certificate: Use system certificates
    • Domain: minnstate.edu
    • Anonymous Identity: not needed, leave blank
Using the Eduroam Configuration Assistant

Some devices, especially those running Windows older than Windows 10, may require the use of Eduroam’s configuration assistant to make Eduroam work. Note that this requires administrative privileges on your device.

  1. Go to https://cat.eduroam.org.
  2. Choose/tap the “Eduroam user: download your Eduroam installer” button.
  3. Select Minnesota State Colleges and Universities as your Home Institution.
  4. Choose/tap Download your Eduroam installer for your operating system.

Minnesota West Hosts NJCAA Region XIII A Tournament

2/28/18

Minnesota West will host the NJCAA Region XIII A Tournament on March 3 and 4, 2018.

March 3, 2018
2:00 pm - Lady Jays face Ridgewater
4:00 pm - Rochester v. Anoka Ramsey

March 4, 2018
2:00 pm - Championship Game

The Minnesota West women's and men's basketball teams will be competing in regional tournament action later this week. For the women's team, however, it will be as the MCAC Southern Division champion.

The Lady Jays turned back the Rochester Yellowjackets 72-68 on their home floor Sunday afternoon in a battle of teams with identical 21-5 overall and 12-1 division records. When it was all over, however, West claimed the outright division championship.

Better yet, the Jays will host the Region XIII Tournament beginning Saturday, March 3, at the Center for Health and Wellness on its own Worthington campus. Sunday's win made it happen.

"We haven't hosted the regional since 1992. And since I've been here (15 years), nobody has hosted the regional except Anoka-Ramsey and Rochester," gushed head coach Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka.

Minnesota West's women will play Ridgewater in a 2 p.m. first-round game on Saturday. In the other first-round matchup, Rochester will play Anoka-Ramsey.

The Minnesota West men's team, which lost to Rochester 89-71 on Saturday, will open tournament play as a fourth seed. The schedule wasn't solidified as of Sunday, but the Bluejays will travel to Coon Rapids for the tournament and open, according to head coach Aaron Poor Bear, against Rainy River.

Sunday's doubleheader with Rochester was postponed a day due to wintry weather.

Lady Jays 72, Rochester 68
Leading Rochester 54-50 after three periods after trailing 36-29 at halftime, the Lady Jays weren't able to put a safe distance between them and the Yellowjackets until late in the fourth quarter. But with 3:12 to play, sophomore sharp-shooter Ashlynn Wabeke drained a 3-point shot beyond the top of the key to give the Jays a 62-57 advantage.

Rochester answered with a 3-point make of its own, but at 2:42 Wabeke connected on another 3-pointer at the top of the key for a 65-60 lead. A nifty turnaround bank shot by teammate Andrea Hinkeldey kept a little distance between the two teams, at 67-63. A Rochester miss, and a Katherin Ihnen rebound with less than a minute to go gave the Lady Jays more breathing room. With 44.8 seconds left, the Jays' Emily Haubrich made two free throws and it was 69-63. Still fighting, the Jackets cut the margin to three points in the final seconds, but when Haubrich hit a free throw with 6.2 seconds remaining, it was a four-point lead -- and finally, a four-point win.

Wabeke hadn't been hitting her long-range bombs for most of the game. She was only 1-for-5 in the first half. She wasn't connecting on them during the warm-up after intermission, either.

"Which is always a good thing for me," she said. "Whenever I don't shoot good in warmups, I know I'm going to shoot good for the game. As soon as they give me a little opening, I have confidence I can hit the shot. I just need a little bit."

Wabeke finished the game with 13 points. Hinkeldey had 21. Haubrich scored 14 and Katherin Ihnen had 13, with 14 rebounds. Hinkeldey had 12 rebounds of her own.

Rochester gave Minnesota West plenty of trouble Sunday on defense. Whenever any Lady Jay got the basketball inside, the Yellowjackets swarmed to her, making it difficult to maneuver.

"We knew they were going to collapse. That's what they did to us when we played 'em in Rochester," said Hinkeldey. "But that left our guards more open. We had some good ball movement. That was definitely our main focus today -- ball movement, getting it inside and out."

Nautika Kotero led Rochester with 20 points, but she fouled out of the game with 5:55 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Jays embraced in the middle of the court. And a sizable Minnesota West crowd applauded appreciatively.

"This is way up there. What a fun game to play," said Hayenga-Hostikka, who said her team was a little out of control early. "I thought we just slowed down in the second half, and we did a better job of doing what we wanted to offensively."

There was no need, she said, to remind her players of what they were playing for.

"I said, 'Should I give a great speech?' That's something you don't need to do for this game. If anything, we were a little more pumped up than we needed to be," she said.

Indeed. Wabeke was still pumped up after it was all over.

"I have no words how it feels. It's just amazing," she said.

Bluejay Villas Housing Project on Schedule

2/6/18

Minnesota West's first student housing project is beginning to take shape in both structure and coordination.

Just two months after the Bluejay Villas’ official groundbreaking event on the college’s Worthington campus, construction crews have made substantial visible progress and are on schedule for August occupancy.

“We should be right on time with move-in - not only for general students, but also for student-athletes coming early for any sports reasons,” said Ryan Clasey, director of property management for Bluffstone LLC - the housing project designer from Davenport, Iowa.

Despite the three-story, 108-bed student dwelling still being under construction, spots are already starting to fill up. The college recently hired Worthington native, Emily Williamson, to handle current and future students’ residence needs.

Williamson, a two-time Minnesota West graduate, said enough student applications have been generated that the leasing phase has begun.

“I have two to three students a day submitting applications online or coming into my office on campus,” Williamson said. “I have no doubt we’ll be able to fill it.”

Clasey agreed.

“Interest is extremely high and starting off pretty well,” he said. “We target that this project should be 100 percent leased out.”

Bluffstone employees visited Minnesota West this week to see the progress and provide an update.

Clasey said despite some expected cold weather, general contractor Brennan Companies of Mankato continues to make impressive progress.

The first-floor framing, he added, will likely be complete very soon, and second-floor framing can then begin.

When finished, the fully furnished student housing facility will feature both shared and private bedrooms and bathrooms, Clasey said.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit will run at $450 per student and the four-bathroom unit at $550 per student. Students will make 10 installments at the appropriate rate depending on their unit type.

While reviewing applications and generating leases is the immediate need, Williamson is already looking ahead to the fall.

“I have a plethora of ideas that go through my mind for student engagement activities,” she said.

Some of those ideas include a move-in welcome day, getting connected day and developing an intramurals program.

“I feel like our fitness and gym facility is underused by students, so by incorporating an intramural program we should get a lot more students interacting, learning and having fun together - and that’s what the (Bluejay) Villas is all about,” she said, “We’re trying to foster a really unique student housing community.”

The Bluejay Villas will also feature a 3,000-square-foot clubhouse for student activity. Clasey said the clubhouse will have a gaming room, fitness center, vending machines, laundry center, study rooms and a manager’s office.

Williamson said she has also been busy marketing the anticipated student housing facility, which includes aiming to generate interest from Minnesota West students in programs on the Jackson campus. She said the college already offers a busing system between the two campuses that she hopes students take advantage of.

“(The Bluejay Villas) are going to be such a great asset to Minnesota West,” Williamson said. “This is something that is way long overdue.”

For residency questions, Bluejay Villas may be reached at 360-0902. Students may also visit Williamson in the student services building on the Worthington campus. Applications are also accessible at www.bluejayvillas.com.

For construction and student life updates, follow @bluejayvillas on Twitter or Instagram or Bluejay Villas Facebook page.

Minnesota West Offers Career Pathway Opportunities!

career pathways 20181/29/18

Minnesota West, in conjunction with the SWWC Service Coop and the Future/Pathways to Prosperity United Way grant, is currently offering several pathways of educational learning and hands on exploration to area high school students in high demand career path areas.

“Students who have the opportunity to successfully participate in a college class while still in high school increase their odds of completing a post-secondary certificate or degree. For many students, these opportunities help them determine interests and career paths,” states Kayla Westra, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness at Minnesota West. “We are excited about the expansion of our PSEO classes, which currently serve students in on campus, online, and in the high school opportunities.”

Opportunities began in the fall semester 2017 with 54 students from ten high schools participating in Introduction to Medical Careers class. The interest and demand areas expanded for spring semester 2018 included:

The Nursing Assistant class is located on the Granite Falls campus and includes ten students from four high schools.

Introduction to Manufacturing and Engineering, which also includes a job seeking skills component, is based at the Granite Falls campus with 14 students from four high schools.

North Star Promise Scholarship Program

Beginning in fall 2024, the North Star Promise (NSP) Scholarship program will create a tuition and fee-free pathway to higher education for eligible Minnesota residents at eligible institutions as a "last-dollar" program by covering the balance of tuition and fees remaining after other scholarships, grants, stipends and tuition waivers have been applied.

By making college accessible and affordable, NSP is intended to have a positive impact on multiple fronts:

  • Help stabilize enrollment at Minnesota public institutions of higher education;
  • Serve as an economic driver for Minnesota by educating qualified workers who are much needed to fill vacancies in the state's labor force;

  • The eligible college or university you are attending will assess your eligibility on a term-by-term basis and award North Star Promise Scholarships to all eligible students.

Access the FAFSA  Access the MN Dream Act

Note: The 2024-25 FAFSA and Minnesota Dream Act will open in December 2023.

How much money can you receive?
There is not a limit on the maximum term, yearly, or lifetime dollar amount of an award you can receive. The amount you receive is based on the "last-dollar" calculation of your eligibility on a term-by-term basis. You can receive up to 100% of the amount charged in tuition and required fees per term, minus all other sources of gift aid you receive.
For students earning 2-year degrees, you can receive the award for a total of 60 credits. For students earning 4-year degrees, you can receive the award for a total of 120 credits.
If funds are available, the highest-need students may also receive North Star Promise Plus funds. The details of this provision of the program are still being determined.

How is the award determined?
The college or university you are attending will calculate your award amount based on the eligibility requirements and award calculation. They will determine your tuition and required fee charges, subtract all other sources of gift aid (scholarships, grants, waivers, and stipends) and award the remaining amount in a North Star Promise scholarship.

How are students notified about their scholarship?
Students are notified of their scholarship through the college or university’s standard awarding process.

What does “last-dollar” mean?
Before calculating your award, “last-dollar” programs consider any other sources of gift aid funding that you receive. “Gift aid” is financial aid that does not require repayment, such as scholarships, grants, stipends, third-party payments, and tuition waivers. Loans and work-study are not sources of gift aid. The goal of this strategy is to utilize available program funds to provide as many eligible students as possible a tuition and fee-free pathway to a college education.

Is the scholarship renewable? If so, for how long?
As a last-dollar scholarship, this award is calculated on a term-by-term basis. If new sources of gift aid are awarded to you, the North Star Promise scholarship will be recalculated.
You must continue to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards at your school.
There is no maximum length of time for which you can receive the award. However, for students earning 2-year degrees, you can receive the award for a total of 60 credits. For students earning 4-year degrees, you can receive the award for a total of 120 credits. The maximum credits for which any student is eligible is a total of 120 credits.

Can I be eligible for the scholarship, but not receive an award?
Yes. If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, but the total of your other sources of “gift aid” already covers the amount of your tuition and required fees, you will not be awarded a North Star Promise Scholarship. This is because the sum of your other aid has already provided you with enough funds to cover your tuition and required fee charges.
However, if you do not receive a North Star Promise Scholarship because other financial aid already covers your tuition and fees, you will still be considered for the North Star Promise Plus funds. The details of this provision of the program are still being determined.

Is there an age restriction on the North Star Promise Scholarship?
No, there are no age criteria used for eligibility for the program.
More information about dependent and independent students can be found on the North Star Promise Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions webpage.

In order to qualify, do I have to be a new, first-time student for the 2024-25 school year?
No, the program is open to new and returning students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Who should I contact if I have more questions?
Please feel free to contact us at 800-658-2330.

Melinda Kassandra Lopez: Setting Goals & Crushing Them!

melinda lopez10/25/17
Melinda Kassandra Lopez is only just getting started!  At 16 years of age, she is slated to graduate twice from college, Minnesota West specifically, before her high school graduation in the spring of 2019.

The 16 year old Minnesota West PSEO student from Truman, MN began her student career at Minnesota West last year at the age of 15. She is currently in Minnesota West’s Practical Nursing Program, which she will complete this May. She will move on to her Associate of Science Nursing Degree next year and is on track to graduate in May of 2019, all before her high school graduation!

Lopez also comes with an impressive resume. She currently attends Fairmont High School in Fairmont, Minnesota where she has been heavily involved in extracurricular activities such as varsity softball, a spokesperson for the Youth Coalition Against Substance and Drug Abuse, Martin County as well as taking a number of AP classes. She pairs this with her demanding nursing program coursework at Minnesota West, where she is also the Vice President of Minnesota West’s student senate on the Worthington Campus. She was recently elected as one of nine governing council members for LEAD MN, a group that represents over 180,000 two-year college students in the State of Minnesota.

Melinda Lopez began her journey as a PSEO student at Minnesota West last year. She was drawn to Minnesota West by the Nursing Program. Melinda relayed, “I am a healer, a helper, and I want to save lives and change the world.”  Step one included becoming a nurse. She had done her homework and learned that our Nursing Program had received accolades for our national licensure examination pass rate being 95.56% for Practical Nursing students in 2016. She made the decision and applied to Minnesota West as PSEO student with intention of also becoming a student in our Nursing Program. At the same time, she had decided to apply to Minnesota West, she also completed her application for a Summer School Program at Harvard University. That’s right, Harvard University, as in the one located in Cambridge, MA.

Lopez soon learned she had been accepted to both. She would attend Minnesota West as a PSEO Nursing Program student and begin her education working towards her ultimate goal of becoming an Obstetric Pediatric Surgical Gynecologist. She would also attend Harvard summer school, which she did last summer (2017), taking two courses - Neurobiology and Writing and Literature. She was honored to be accepted to the summer school program at Harvard. The process is rigorous and entry was difficult. She was one of the first students to apply for the 2017 summer program and was honored to join students from all over the world. During the demanding Harvard Summer School Program, she said she definitely learned to manage herself and her time wisely which benefits her currently in all aspects of her busy life.

Of Minnesota West, she says I feel a “good vibe from the community and the campus” and felt like “everyone is working with me towards my goals."  Minnesota West has “been a great way for me to transition to a new mindset, mature academically, grow as a person and prepare me for the next step."

Melinda’s educational and career goals are well defined and she has definitely shown drive and determination in achieving them. Her dream is to earn her nursing degrees at Minnesota West, graduate high school next year from Fairmont High School with the class of 2019, and enter Harvard University as an undergraduate in the Fall of 2019 to continue her education. Melinda has wanted to become a doctor since the age of four, and after witnessing the miracle of life when her siblings were born, she realized she wanted a career in pediatrics and gynecology, specifically. She is well on her way! We are proud to have Melinda as a student here at Minnesota West learning with purpose.  We look forward to celebrating her future achievements!

The construction cost for The Villas has been privately financed by the developer with First National Bank - Fulda, MN and First American State Bank - Bettendorf, IA.

“Minnesota West clearly had a need for housing at its Worthington campus, and I’m pleased we were able to help secure a state grant and move this project forward,” said State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake). “This facility is not only critical for our students but for our communities, as it will free up much-needed housing units throughout our region.”

Worthington Mayor, Mike Kuhle comments, “Having witnessed the growth of the community colleges in Estherville and Sheldon, IA when they put in on campus housing. It was a goal that I have had since becoming Mayor to get on campus housing at Minnesota West. This housing project not only benefits the college but the community as well with badly needed housing. If Minnesota West grows and students and jobs grow as well this is good for Economic Development for Worthington.”

“Minnesota West appreciates the support of our community leaders, local legislators, and our Minnesota State staff in aligning resources in service to our students and the Worthington community.  We are grateful for their determination and advocacy in helping our community’s college, Minnesota West, attract and retain our most important resource; the talent of this region. This innovative public-private partnership evidences the power of community and Greater Minnesota’s necessity to work in close collaboration across sectors for a shared purpose”, adds Minnesota West President Dr. Terry Gaalswyk.

Alumni Spotlight: Main Street Graduates

9/28/17

msd staff

The lobby of Main Street Dental is bustling with activity on a Thursday afternoon. Patients and their families wait quietly on the comfy sofas next to the coffee maker; one patient has just emerged from his appointment with a mouthful of gauze; a small boy watches an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants on the lobby TV while playing with toys provided for the young patrons like himself. The dental office, located in Montevideo, MN is clearly doing well. In 2015, it moved from a few blocks away into this newly renovated office space. And today it houses three dentists and 20 employees. But this story isn’t about the office expansion, which is exciting in its own right. More intriguing is that of the 23 total employees, six of them, or over ¼ of the entire staff, are graduates of the Minnesota West Dental Assisting program on the Canby Campus. And while they have all performed patient care in their roles, they do much more, from working at the front desk to processing insurance claims to managing the office itself. Additionally, each has forged her own career path in getting to where she is today.

msd brandi

FIrst in Minnesota
Brandi Tweeter is a 1997 Minnesota West Dental Assistant graduate and one of the first Dental Therapists in Minnesota. Brandi worked for 12 years as a dental assistant at Main Street Dental before diving back into college coursework. In 2009, while continuing to work as a dental assistant, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN. Then, two years later in 2011, she received her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota as part of the inaugural class of Dental Therapists in the state of Minnesota. “A dental therapist is kind of like a PA (physician’s assistant) at a medical clinic,” says Brandi. Although she cannot perform root canals or advanced surgeries like dentists can do, she can perform many of the routine prevention and treatment services that patients require such as filling cavities, placing temporary crowns, and even extracting teeth in certain cases.

Twelve years of dental assisting experience prior to graduate school made a big difference in Brandi’s studies. “Much of the first year of my master’s program was review, as I had already done much of what was being taught,” and she quickly found that her classmates leaned on her during their clinical experiences in the program. While the rest of her graduating class took jobs in public practice, such as public clinics and community health centers, Tweeter became the first dental therapist in the state of Minnesota to work in a private practice. She returned to Main Street Dental, and today is one of three dental therapists in the office, who, as part of their licensure requirements, provide dental care to underinsured and underserved populations.

The Value of On the Job Training
Three of the most recent graduates at the dental office landed at Main Street Dental via their externship experience. All students of the Minnesota West Dental Assistant program must undertake two, six-week clinic experiences toward the end of their studies. The externship program requires students to work at a dental office under the supervision of the dentist. Although unpaid, the externship provides invaluable experiences for students, and in many cases job prospects after graduation. Abi Belaen (class of 2014), Shawna Berg (Class of 2015), and Ariel Stone (class of 2015) all credit their employment to their externship experience. Each individual came to dental assisting by a different route - Ariel originally planned to pursue Nursing; Abi was originally an Elementary Education major at a four-year school; and Shawna was “always interested” in dental assisting. However, they all agreed that the variety of work and the value of helping others continue to provide them satisfaction in their careers.

Health Information Management Program Accreditation Status

7/31/17

Minnesota West Community & Technical College is pleased to announce candidacy status of the Associate Degree Health Information Management (HIT) program.

Candidacy status with Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) allows current and future Health Information Technology (HIT) students to be able to apply for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam upon final Accreditation of the school and after the student graduates from the HIT program at Minnesota West.  Seeking accreditation from CAHIIM is a voluntary peer review process that assures academic quality in higher education.

“Candidacy status is a huge step for Minnesota West.  Candidacy status by CAHIIM, indicates that we are preparing students to enter the Health Information Profession with relevant and hands on experience, something employers are seeking. The need for Health Information Professionals has not slowed down and we want to be giving our students the edge they need to have more possibilities for their future”, notes Minnesota West instructor, Elaina Nichols.

Jackie Otkin, Minnesota West Pipestone Campus Dean, states, “This is an exciting opportunity for our students to sit for the national exam. The faculty at Minnesota West work extremely hard to design our program and curriculum to meet the needs of industry and accreditation standards.”

For more information on the HIT program contact Minnesota West at 800-658-2330 or www.mnwest.edu.

The Associate Degree Health Information Management Program is in Candidacy Status, pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Minnesota West Online

State Authorization

Minnesota West Community and Technical College (Minnesota West) offers online courses and programs to a wide array of learners, across the region and our nation, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Minnesota West is a member of NC-SARA (National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements), which means we share a reciprocity agreement with all states who are part of the NC-SARA group. The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement is an agreement among member states, districts and territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state. SARA is overseen by a National Council and administered by four regional education compacts.

To find out if you live in a state that has joined this consortium, view the NC-SARA map. If you don’t see your state listed as NC-SARA approved, know that more states are coming on board quickly, and soon we anticipate that most states will be participating.

Minnesota West has been approved by the State of Minnesota to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. NC-SARA is a voluntary, regional approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education.

Student Consumer Complaint Process
Pursuant to the United States Department of Education’s Program Integrity Rule, institutions providing online education are required to provide all prospective and current students contact information of the state agency or agencies that handle complaints against postsecondary education institutions offering distance learning within that state.

We encourage you to seek resolution to any concerns by discussing them informally with a staff member at the College. If a complaint cannot be handled informally, Minnesota West students are encouraged to use our complaint process.

If a complaint cannot be resolved at the College level, you may contact the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. If you reside in another state, you may contact your local state agency (PDF) for further information.

Carpentry Returns to Pipestone Campus

carpentry returns to pipestone6/23/17

Minnesota West is pleased to announce the re-introduction of the Carpentry program to our Pipestone campus with the collaboration of the Pipestone City Economic Development Authority, and Pipestone Area Schools.

In spring of 2014, the Carpentry program was suspended on the Pipestone campus due to low enrollment numbers. However, since then, the job demand for carpentry has continued to grow creating an opportunity to look for solutions in meeting the needs of industry. The program will be re-instated for enrollment beginning this fall semester, starting in August.

The program has been designed to work with Pipestone High School academic schedules allowing high schools students to take courses at the Pipestone campus and housing projects for hands-on learning have been established by Pipestone City Economic Development Authority.

Solomon Derby, alum of the Minnesota West Carpentry program has been recently hired to teach the program. Derby has a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies & Sociology from SDSU and an Associate’s degree in Carpentry from Minnesota West. Derby has been working in the carpentry industry and has previous instructor experience.

Minnesota West President, Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, “Minnesota West is impressed with the community’s support and proud of the collaboration evidenced by leadership of the EDA, Pipestone School District, and our own team in creativity working to provide opportunities for students. Our sincerest appreciation to our partners in developing a unique solution to the housing shortage in Pipestone.”

Kevin Paulsen, Chairperson of Pipestone City Economic Development Authority (EDA), “The Pipestone City EDA understands that economic development can be achieved in many ways. Economic development is not just creating jobs, but rather filling the needs of a community for continued growth toward being a healthy community. A healthy community is one that provides jobs, housing, education, safety, recreation, leisure life, and more. The collaboration between Pipestone Area Schools, Minnesota West, and the Pipestone EDA will provide exposure and training in the construction trade, create a work force for local contractors, inspire potential careers, help to improve blighted properties, and create home ownership opportunities.”

Kevin Enerson, Superintendent Pipestone Schools, “Pipestone Area Schools strategic goals look to ensure college and career readiness for our students and to engage the community with the district. The Construction Program provides a wonderful opportunity to our students as we build partnerships with Minnesota West and Pipestone EDA that will meet community needs and support post-secondary opportunities. This has huge potential for community partnerships with other businesses and organizations as we go forward.”

Minnesota West Pipestone Dean, Jackie Otkin, “We are excited to bring back the Carpentry program to the Pipestone campus. The joint collaboration between the partners has facilitated opportunities for our community, students, and industry. This is an excellent example of a community utilizing its resources to promote the betterment of the community and region of southwest Minnesota.”

If you are interested in enrolling or learning more about the carpentry program please contact us at www.mnwest.edu or 800-658-2330.

Our Students Make It Happen!

daophon meunsaveng1/1/17

We are so proud of our students and their accomplishments.

Meet Daophong Meunsaveng,
a Mechatronics student from our Worthington Campus, employed by Bedford Industries. At Minnesota West, we understand many of our students juggle academics, work, and families. Daophong's story is one of perseverance and accomplishment; our favorite story to tell.

Congratulations, Daophong! We are proud of your success and so excited to share your story. Our students are what make Minnesota West a great place to Learn with Purpose!

A Message from Daophong

My name is Daophonh Meunsaveng and I am 47 years old. I never thought that 26 years after I graduated from high school that I would be going back to college. But I did.

It all started when I applied and got a job as machine maintenance at Bedford Industries. As part of the job reqirement I was to take a two-year course of Mechatronic at Minnesota West. At first I was scared about the college thing. I was afraid that I won’t do good in the classes. Because at that moment in my life, I was working full time at Bedford Industries from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. and I also had a part-time job from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. delivering newspapers for Daily Globe. And then school from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And I do all of these thing Monday thru Friday. I know it’s a lot. That doesn’t leave much time for rest but that’s what the weekends are for.

So far I have made it through for the first year. My first semester I got all A’s with a GPA of 4.0 and made it on the Dean’s List at Minnesota West. And for my second semester I again got all A’s with the 4.0 GPA. I hope that my story will inspire and encourage others to follow my footsteps and change their lives like I did to mine. Before I accomplished all of these thing, I have doubt like most people would. Like how can I do it. I don’t have time for this. I don’t have the money to pay for it. But I was wrong.

Thanks to Bedford Industries and the State of Minnesota Grant, it made everything all possible for me to pursue my education goals. With the help that I got from this, it give me the encouragement and the will to make the time to make it happen. So far it’s going as planned. With the continuing help from Bedford, I will plan to go after the AAS degree in Mechatronics. Once again, I would like to thank Bedford Industries and the Grant that made it possible for me to change my life. If I can do it, anyone can.

Create your own success story!  Learn with Purpose at Minnesota West.

We value and appreciate our Industry Partnerships!

Precision Machining Program Receives Equipment

precision machining equipment5/30/17
Granite Falls Campus

Minnesota West's Precision Machining Program has received a new Haas Mini Mill valued at $36,000 for its lab. This is a 3 axis CNC (computer numeric control) machining center. Also included is a control panel CNC simulator.

The students will learn to design their product and then program that configuration on the new machine. Once information is entered on the CNC, the machine will utilize a variety of drill bits to cut and shape a part (or tool) used for various means in industry.

As a member of the Minnesota Advancing Manufacturing Partnership (MnAMP), Minnesota West received $36,000 in funding provided by a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration. The Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership is a consortium of 12 geographically-dispersed community colleges and two universities from Minnesota State which was created to help close the manufacturing skills gap in Minnesota. To address this gap, a 15 million dollar Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant was awarded to the consortium and focuses on career pathways in advanced manufacturing specific to Precision Machining, Mechatronics, and Welding.

Ray Louwagie, Minnesota West Precision Machining instructor, comments, “Haas CNC Machine Tools are a 100% American manufactured in CA. The VMC (vertical machining center) is a CNC (computer numerical control) machine, similar to a manual vertical mill; however, it has capabilities of automatic tool changes and the ability to machine complicated geometry paths on the workpiece. This addition to the Precision Machining Program at the Granite Falls Campus will allow students to become familiar with state of the art machine tools currently being used in industry.”

Now in its twelfth year, the Digital Community Colleges Survey analyzes how community colleges use a range of technologies to improve services to students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College placed 9th in the mid-sized college category. This is the tenth time Minnesota West has been recognized as a Digital Community College winner.

Kayla Westra, Dean of Distance Learning and Technology comments, “Students are the focus at Minnesota West, and we are committed to providing technology services that meet the needs of all of our learners, whether they are on campus or at a distance. Technology is an integral part of our world, and enabling our students to succeed academically and then transition to their careers is the ultimate reward.”

“This year’s survey indicates community colleges are continuing to improve efforts at creating cost-effective platforms and Open Education Resources, mobile environments, real-time resources, telepresence robots and more to create robust online and mobile environments for their students,” said Dr. Kecia Ray, executive director for the Center for Digital Education. “Congratulations to this year’s survey winners.”

Newly-Published Author, Trevoris Waugh

Trevoris Waugh shares his feelings on love, death and a variety of human emotions through his newly-published book, Blessed.

Trevoris is a 19-year-old freshman at Minnesota West, coming to us from Miami, Florida. Recruited by the Bluejay basketball organization, Trevoris is a Liberal Arts major with a deep appreciation for the power of words.

Blessed
is dedicated to Trevoris' Grandmother, by whom he was raised. The book offers insight into his own thoughts and feelings. By putting his thoughts to paper in the form of poetry, Trevoris hopes to relate to others and help people realize their own purpose through the power of his words.

Writing since age eleven, Trevoris was encouraged by his girlfriend to bring his work to the masses. Trevoris published an e-book and was subsequently contacted by two publishing companies to provide writing samples. Each company became interested in publishing his work. And, in the end, Trevoris chose Author House as his publisher.

As for the future, Trevoris looks to complete his Liberal Arts degree, to continue playing basketball and, of course, to write!

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of Blessed, you can find the book on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble Booksellers.

Polaris Donates to Power Sports Program

polaris 20172/28/17
Jackson Campus

Polaris Industries has generously donated five motorcycles to Minnesota West's Power Sports program valued at $75,000 along with an additional $55,000 in state-of-the-art motors and transmissions to use for technical, industry endorsed training for tomorrow’s aspiring technicians.

In addition, Polaris will provide Minnesota West students with access to Polaris factory online training courses, which are used by the company’s highly-skilled technicians. These trainings, which lead to gold standard certified technicians, provide a distinct, competitive employment edge for students of the Minnesota West Power Sports program. Students’ technical skills are aligned, endorsed and certified to a proven industry-leader’s professional standards.

The donation will also allow Minnesota West to apply for matching funds through Minnesota State. The Leveraged Equipment program accelerates the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment on which to train students in areas with high employer need and support. The program is intended to assist colleges and programs in building long term partnerships with communities and employers in high need sectors.

Brandon Lee, Global Service Development Manager at Polaris comments, “Polaris believes in helping to create strong and vibrant communities, which includes supporting students and the future workforce. Through this donation to the Minnesota West, we strive to help students grow their technical skills by providing hands-on access to the latest equipment and technology we can offer.”

Jason Bohl, Power Sports Technology Instructor at the Jackson campus of Minnesota West, adds, “I am so excited and truly grateful that Polaris has committed to making an investment in our students educations by donating an unbelievable amount of resources and technology to our technical program. With the combinations of equipment, curriculum, and now the online training courses, our students will leave Minnesota West with qualifications that will put them at the top of the list when they apply for employment in the power sports industry.  Thank you again Polaris!”

Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, president of Minnesota West, comments, “Polaris’ support of our Power Sports program through this generous donation of equipment and technical trainings enables Minnesota West to advance our vision of providing the most relevant career technical programs. Polaris’ investment is yet another indication of the real workforce opportunities we have in this region.  Minnesota West is grateful for Polaris’ generosity and confidence in the graduates of our Power Sports program. Thank you to the Polaris Industries team and member of Minnesota West’s Presidents Advisory Council for challenging the college and securing the assistance needed to make this occur.”

The Minnesota West Community & Technical College Power Sports Program is a 32 credit (one year program) designed to prepare students for employment at motorcycle, snowmobile or ATV dealerships, distributorships and manufacturers. The primary focus of the program involves diagnosis, service, and repair.

Radiologic Technology Program Receives Continued Accreditation

radiologic technology accreditation1/26/17

Minnesota West has received continuing accreditation status of the associate degree radiologic technology program for eight years from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The JRCERT is the only agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for the accreditation of traditional and distance delivery educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry. The program was evaluated according to the Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiography (2014).

Dr. Terry Gaalswyk, Minnesota West President comments, “I would like to focus on another indication of our commitment to extraordinary education and service aligned with the most rigorous review process – our outcome is the maximum award allowed by JRCET. With great pride, I congratulate our program faculty Falon Paluch, Sally Sieve and Dean Otkin on assuring Minnesota West students and our partners receive the most extraordinary education and exceptional value – The continued accreditation is a hallmark of quality, assuring our radiologic technology program meets the highest standards and is evidence of our continue commitment to adhering to the highest academic standards.”

The Radiologic Technology program prepares students to gain knowledge and skills necessary to perform various radiologic procedures through didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences and carries out these functions under the supervision of a Registered Radiologic Technologist. Instruction in x-ray procedures, equipment operation, patient care and CT imaging included.

For more information, visit our Radiologic Technology program website or contact us at 800-658-2330.

Minnesota State Universities Guarantee Admission and Credit Transfer

11/17/16
Minnesota West Community & Technical College is one of 26 colleges within Minnesota State where students are able to complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and earn an A.A. degree and be eligible for guaranteed admission and full credit transfer to any of the seven universities within Minnesota State.

Under a new program announced today by Minnesota State, students who complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and earn a minimum 2.0 GPA* in an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from any Minnesota State college are guaranteed admission to every one of the seven Minnesota State universities with junior year status. This new collaboration ensures that students can seamlessly and reliably transfer from Minnesota State colleges to Minnesota State universities.

“Minnesota State provides an extraordinary education that is the most affordable and accessible option in the state,” said Virginia Arthur, president of Metropolitan State University. “With this guarantee, students can take full advantage of the significant cost savings our colleges and universities offer, graduate with significantly less debt than their peers, and emerge with the skills and knowledge needed to be prepared for the jobs of the future, provide for their families and contribute to their community and to the state’s economy.”

This guarantee saves students money because they can take advantage of the lower tuition rates at Minnesota State colleges for their freshman and sophomore years, then transfer to a Minnesota State university to complete their bachelor’s degree. Tuition and fees at a Minnesota State college are significantly lower – between one-half and one-tenth the cost -- of other higher education options within the state.

“This guarantee is something that only Minnesota State can offer,” said Anne Blackhurst, president of Minnesota State University Moorhead. “In addition to our overall quality and affordability, it sets our state colleges and universities apart from other higher education options in Minnesota – both public and private. Only we can make this guarantee because we are a collaborative system focused on serving the needs of students and the state of Minnesota.”

While students who complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree from any of the 26 Minnesota State community colleges are guaranteed admission and full credit transfer to any of the seven Minnesota State universities, this collaboration does not guarantee admittance to specific majors. Academic requirements for major degree programs at state universities vary. For this reason, students considering credit transfer should discuss their academic goals with an advisor at the state university they wish to attend.

Apply now to Minnesota West.

Military Friendly School 2017

military friendly school 201711/10/16

Minnesota West Community & Technical College has been designated a 2017 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university, or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation. Ratings methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

According to Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer at Victory Media, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

Data calculations and tabulations were independently evaluated for completeness and accuracy by EY . The survey is administered for free and is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate. Criteria for consideration can be found at https://militaryfriendly.com.

For the past two years, we have shown two of the three part series of Coming Back with Wes Moore called, “Coming Back” and “Fitting In.”  This third and final video is called “Moving Forward.”

This is another glimpse into the lives of the Veterans we have met in the other two videos. It also shows that a Veteran’s service may not be done once they come home. In order to move forward and on with their lives, they must find a new purpose. The Veterans, in these videos, find their purpose in serving others.

On Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2016,  Minnesota West will be broadcasting the third and final episode of Coming Home with Wes Moore “Moving Forward” at 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Commons on the Worthington Campus.

The YouTube video will be available so faculty and staff can watch it at his/her convenience and it can also be shown on campus.  The link is https://youtu.be/VeItRe5viOA

A Tale of Two Bluejays: Friendship and Football

tale of two bluejays10/15/16

Fifth Grade. That is when Austin Pulse and Andrew Sorensen met for the first time and became friends not too far away, in Brandon, South Dakota. Fast forward a few years to today. Andrew and Austin, still friends and now roommates, both freshman at Minnesota West, both Law Enforcement majors and once again teammates - Bluejays this time.

Photo: Austin Pulse is pictured on the left and Andrew Sorensen is on the right.

Austin Pulse has been aware of Minnesota West for quite a while, both of his parents attended Minnesota West and were student athletes. Austin's father Scott Pulse wrestled under Bluejay Football head coach, Jeff Linder, and was also a graduate of the Minnesota West Law Enforcement program. His Mother, Karli Oye, played volleyball and softball as a Lady Jay. Austin said, “They both encouraged me to look into Minnesota West. So I did and I ended up loving it.” He decided to apply to the Law Enforcement program as his Father and many other family members have worked in law enforcement which has inspired Austin to make the same choice. Austin is an offensive and defensive lineman in the Bluejay football program. His favorite part of being a Bluejay is the way the team has come together and feels like a family as well as all the new people he has met and friends made in the last few months.

Andrew Sorensen learned about Minnesota West through Austin, as well as through his own Father. He was further drawn to Minnesota West by the comprehensive Law Enforcement program. Minnesota West was a great choice for Andrew to prepare him for his future career, as well as to continue playing football. And with an added bonus of being only about 45 minutes from home. Andrew’s draw to the Law Enforcement program comes from his desire to continue to be physically active within his career, but more importantly is his desire to be involved in community and make a difference. Andrew is a middle linebacker with the Bluejays and currently leads the NJCAA in tackles. Andrew was very modest when congratulated on leading the nation in tackles. Like Austin, he enjoys being part of a family here at Minnesota West, not only as part of the Bluejay Football Program, but also within the Law Enforcement Program.

We look forward to seeing many great things from Austin and Andrew to come! We are proud of our student athletes learning with purpose at Minnesota West.
