At Minnesota West Community & Technical College, one English instructor stood out not only for his commitment to teaching but also for his extraordinary talent as a children's book author.

Bernstrom's story is one of resilience and passion for storytelling that truly captures the heart of the Minnesota West community. Born in Iowa, Daniel faced challenges early on, repeating the first grade due to difficulties with reading. However, he turned his struggles into strengths, using them as fuel to pursue his passion for writing.

His journey led him to Hamline University, where he pursued a Master's degree despite the challenges posed by his failing eyesight. [During that time], he found mentorship and guidance, including working with award-winning author Susan Marie Swanson on Big Papa and the Time Machine.

As an adult living in Red Wing, Minnesota, Daniel found his calling in writing picture books that capture the imagination and resonate with readers of all ages.

"For the last 10 years, I’ve been on a journey to write joy," wrote Bernstrom as one of the 36 finalists for the Minnesota Book Artist Award in 2021, presented by The Friends of the Saint Paul Library.

Every morning, before the sun comes up, Bernstrom can be found at his desk crafting stories that come to life on the pages of children's books. In the quiet solitude of his home, he finds inspiration. Bernstrom views writing as essential as walking or eating — it's a part of who he is.

Bernstrom’s books, such as Big Papa and the Time Machine and Good Night, Little Man, are inspired by his rich heritage and personal experiences, offering readers a glimpse into the soulful tales that shaped Bernstrom's life.

Beyond his writing, Bernstrom is a dedicated English instructor at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. He encourages his students to find their voices for connection and to embrace the beauty of language in all its forms.

Minnesota holds a special place in Bernstrom's heart, not just as his home, but as the place that helped him navigate the challenges of his visual impairment. Through rehabilitation and support from Minnesota State Services for the Blind and the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Daniel received the tools and training he needed to adapt to his changing circumstances.

With 7 distinct works of children's picture books listed on Goodreads, Daniel Bernstrom's influence in the world of children's literature continues to grow. Bernstrom is committed to his students and encourages aspiring writers to immerse themselves in reading and to connect with others who share their passion for storytelling.

In March 2024, Bernstrom was honored with a $4,000 SMAC Artist Equity grant. This grant aims to support Black, Indigenous, and other artists of color in advancing their artistic careers. Bernstrom plans to utilize the grant to participate in the Whale Rock writing mentorship program, collaborating with Gary D. Schmidt to refine his middle-grade fiction book titled "The Five." The narrative centers on a diverse family's relocation to Southwest Minnesota and follows the eldest daughter's journey as she confronts her fears of the unknown. This grant opportunity is made possible by the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, which is committed to fostering the growth and development of underrepresented artists in the region.

He was nominated in April alongside other talented authors from across the country for the 2025 Star of the North (SOTN) Award for his book, Song in The City. This recognition comes alongside his book being showcased at the Minnesota Historical Society. The award aims to promote enjoyable and high-quality picture books for school-aged children. A committee selects ten nominees, and throughout the year, educators and librarians are encouraged to engage children with these books through activities and readings. In March of 2025, students in grades K-2 statewide will vote for their favorite book, with the one receiving the most votes winning the award in its category.

In the heart of Minnesota, his stories inspire and educate readers around the world (Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, Japan, India, the UK, and Australia), igniting imaginations while reminding us all that anything is possible.
