New Solar Energy Class Offered

1/18/18
Minnesota West will be bringing Solar Electric training courses to the Jackson and Canby campuses this year. The training will begin with a pilot project offering.

On Saturdays, beginning February 10, 2018, the college will offer the course, “Introduction to Solar Assessment."

This course, SOLR 1020, introduces students to the basics of solar energy and solar site assessment for solar photovoltaic and thermal systems.  Students will measure the “solar window” with a solar Pathfinder ™ and estimate the effects of climate, system design, and vegetation growth (and removal) on energy production. Using industry standard hardware, mounting options and equipment, students will propose system designs, model economic and environmental cost and benefits, and report their findings.

SOLR 1020 is step one of a new course series that will be offered beginning in fall 2018. At Minnesota West, we are hoping to engage electricians who are considering expanding their work to include solar energy. We also hope to engage the general public seeking to increase their knowledge and understanding of solar electric generation.

This initial offering will be on Saturdays beginning February 10, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. Class sessions are scheduled for February 10 and 24, March 24, April 7 and 21, and finishing up on May 5, 2018. Registration for the class should be completed prior to the February 10 start. Early registration is encouraged as course enrollment will be limited. Students can access this course at either the Canby or Jackson campus.
