All-Minnesota Academic Team

Minnesota West would like to congratulate Michaela Miller, Shelby Springman, Todd VanHeuveln, Isaac Wass, and Ashley Zelmer, for being named to the All-Minnesota Academic Team. These students were nominated by staff or faculty to apply for the team.


The All-State Academic Team was introduced nearly 20 years ago to honor and to recognize two-year college students for their leadership, academic achievement, and community and college service.  In 1994, state academic teams were introduced as a way to provide scholarships and scholastic recognition to Phi Theta Kappa members while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. 


Michaela Miller from Tracy, MN is student at Minnesota West, Pipestone campus.  She is enrolled at Pipestone for Medical Administrative Secretary with the Coding Specialist Diploma. After completing her degree, she plans on transferring to South Dakota State University to begin the pre-professional program for Physical Therapy.  She has been Student Senate president and involved with Minnesota State College Student Association.  She has received major scholarships including the Minnesota State Archery Association, MSCSA Leadership Scholarship and Outstanding Young Adult scholarship.


Shelby Springman from Wilmont, MN is a sophomore at Minnesota West, Worthington campus.  After completing her liberal arts degree this spring she will be transferring to the University of Wisconsin – River Falls for an Animal Science major.  Springman is a Phi Theta Kappa and Student Senate officer; she has served on hiring committees for the college, is a Student Ambassador, and has 12 years’ experience in 4-H. She has received several scholarships and awards both on and off campus. 


Todd VanHeuveln from Cottonwood, MN is a nontraditional student at Minnesota West, Granite Falls campus. He has completed his A.A.S. degree in Information Security and Assurances and Computer Support Technician and is currently working on his A.A. degree at Minnesota West.  He planes on earning his Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management from Minnesota State University, Moorhead.  VanHeuveln has been involved in Student Senate, Phi Theta Kappa, and Business Professionals of America (BPA).  He has won both state and national competitions in BPA.    


Isaac Wass, from Bigelow, MN is a sophomore at Minnesota West, Worthington campus. Wass is planning on graduating with an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Science degree.  After completing his degrees is has been awarded the Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he plans to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics.  He sings in the community of Chamber Singers, plays tuba and first-chair cello in city musical groups, in the campus choir and musical, an officer in Phi Theta Kappa and Student Senate. Wass also mentors the high school Robotics Club and helps coach the high school Knowledge Bowl team.


Ashley Zemler, from Adrian, MN
is a student at Minnesota West, Luverne center; she graduated in 2012 from the Worthington campus with a liberal arts degree and is currently in the Radiologic Technologist Program. She is an officer in Student Senate, a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has been on the dean’s list every semester.  

Miller, Springman, VanHeuveln, Wass and Zemler attended a formal recognition ceremony on April 19 in Vadnais Heights, MN.  The five Minnesota West nominees received a medallion during the ceremony.  The 2013 All-Minnesota Academic Team consists of 48 outstanding students throughout the state of Minnesota each student representing a Minnesota Community and Technical College.
