Library Services - Off-campus Access to Library Resources

Library services are provided for all Minnesota West students regardless of their physical location.

Students should use the library website to:

Library Card
Your student photo ID card is also your library card. A 14-digit library barcode number is printed on the ID card. You will need this barcode number and/or your Star ID/password to use many of the resources and services available through the library, for example,

  • to borrow books through interlibrary loan.

  • to search databases for full text periodical articles.

  • to view videos from the streaming video databases.

  • to explore the electronic book collection.

If you are an online-only student and will not be on campus to have a photo student ID card made, you may use your Star ID/password to access web-based databases, or, if you want to have a barcode, please send an email to a librarian indicating you are an online-only student requesting a library barcode. The librarian will verify your student status and then email your barcode and password to you.

Interlibrary Loan

Books, videos, and articles can be requested through interlibrary loan.

  • In MnPals (the online catalog), choose the “Login to Request Item” option.

  • In the article databases, choose “Place an Interlibrary Loan Request,” if the desired article isn’t available in full text.

  • You will need to login with your library barcode number and password (last name) to place your request.

If you do not live within close proximity to one of our campuses and need to place a request for materials, the materials can be mailed to your home address, if you indicate you are a distance student in your request.

  • In the Notes field, please state “Distance student; mail to home address.”

  • There is no cost for the loan of books or videos, but you will be held responsible for returning them safely and on time.

  • Articles are often sent electronically and do not need to be returned.

See Circulation Policies for additional information.

Reference Help
If you are unable to identify specific books or articles for your topic, have questions about placing interlibrary loan requests, or need other library assistance, please contact a reference librarian.
